I am always researching for the best cargo bed lights to wire so I can turn them on anytime. I like that the 2016 has the option already part of the truck. Is there any reason I couldn't wire the same set up. I do like the location of the light on the 2016 and the 3 way switch. I Have a 2015

Can this be done? I'd probably just have the dealer do it if possible

The biggest question is whether the openings in the cab between the 2 gens is the same. I've seen people retro-fit GM 3rd brake light/cargo light lamps into Tacos with some cutting. So whether the gen-3 OEM lamp fit's or not, you can make it work. I can guarantee the dealer will tell you "it can't be done". So you'll need to come up with something on your own.
