3.5 Hit or miss?

Times have changed, technology has improved, and not to mention customer satisfaction is still around. Why would I want to purchase a $40k truck that has subpar power? If a Colorado can pack economy with some power, so should the Tacoma.

2004 double cab weighs 3705 powered by a 190 hp engine.

19.5 lbs/hp

2016 double cab weighs 4480 powered by a 278 hp engine.

16.11 lbs/hp

The new Tacoma is better powered than a first gen truck. Hands down.

 

Especially when I can get a diesel option with better mpg and better figures for less or the same price. Sure it's a Chevy but come on Toyota.

 

This is the issue.


Everybody thinks they need crazy power to weight ratios. The reality is that 99% of people get by just fine. Need vs want. Plan and simple.

 

It also has a larger footprint, more wind resistance, supposed to be able to tow more, way more technology on board, etc.

 

Obviously, you're still living in the past and don't want to accept the fact that the market has changed. People use trucks for more than work these days. They're daily's for a majority of people, so they demand "high" performance. I wouldn't want to lay down some high five digits that granted me a slow ass truck.

Have you don't the equivalent for the torque. Horse power isn't everything

Pretty darn close.

 

And it has 40 more horses than the 2nd gen. Don't be stupid

Seems the Colorado/Canyon V6 is just adequate unless you ramp up the rpm. So go ahead, pay GMC the 40K for the GMC you think has economy and some power.

 

Both the V6 and the Diesel could be had for sub 40k and both have better power and better MPG.

 

Didn't say I was buying a new truck now did I? I'm sticking with the ole faithful 4.0. Don't see the point in trading a well working vehicle with only 105k on the odo. But please, go ahead and continue to argue how the diesel Colorado has such "adequate" power and economy.

 

The 3.5 has plenty of HP. 278 compared to the 2nd gens (bigger engine) 236. I do think it needs more torque. That being said I like the new engine. It's a truck, I don't care if it does 0-60 in over 8. I care that I can do some serious off roading in a stock truck and can also tow and haul a good amount. I do appreciate the improved mileage as well. If you're complaining your truck is slow let me remind you, ITS A TRUCK. You can get something a lot faster if you want. Yes the colorado is more powerful. If I were choosing between a 2wd tacoma and canyon, I'd get the canyon. But part of having a truck is being able to go places others can't. Why people use they're trucks as mall crawlers is beyond me. And it doesn't have "subpar power". Acceleration, maybe, but its gotten me up stuff I wouldn't have dreamed of in my dads old 1st gen. Not to mention the interiors not from the 90's like the second gen.
