well I bought my Tacoma last November with 142k on the odometer. Not even a full year later and now 153k my transmission is blown. Glad I got the warranty. I'm having a new tranny put in on Monday for only a 100$ deductible.

What caused the transmission to go out. Unusual to have one just go out with just 153K miles.

Sounds similar, i bought a 2008 tacoma with 94k, on it. Got a extended warranty, ever since i had it i always felt something was iffy with the tranny, when i came to a hard stop, the truck would lunch forward, of course toyota said it was a driveline issue and i figured axle wrap, but i knew deep down that wasn't it, around 100,000 miles it shifted funny and threw a code for a shift solenoid, i took it to toyota and explained to them, they 'diagnosed' that what i told them was true and said toyota doesn't rebuild they just replace, so i got a new transmission as well for 100 bucks.

Thanks for all the responses. I asked the mechanic tech and he said that it just happens sometimes. I'm just glad I had the warranty. Now I gotta figure out the annoying driveline vibration

Yeah I agree. I'll ask. I didn't question much cause it's only gonna cost me 100$ and I was in shock at the time

X2. Would love to know the mechanic's assesses cause. And they absolutely have an assessed mechanical cause - just ask them for it. You still paid for the warranty, so you're still the paying customer here - I would firmly ask them what they think caused it, and then pass it on to us. :-D

Mine does that lunging forward at stops on occasion. Otherwise, it shifts well. Any ideas on what that is? Preventive maintenance?

Honestly I believe the slight bump after a stop is what everyone experiences. What i had, when i am driving and have to hit the brakes pretty hard, the truck would stop and then literally lunge forward, like it was unwinding from 5th gear to 1st, i guess thats why the failed shift solenoids went out

It just happens sometimes is the equivalent of taking your computer in for repairs and they always say You have a virus and I'll have to reformat instead of actually fixing it.

The transmission momentarily shifts into neutral while at stop to save gas from drag while in drive supposed to do it un noticeable

I looked in the manual for an explanation of why the transmission selects neutral to save gas but I couldnt find the information .
Do you by chance know where I can find this info ?
Its very unusual for any transmission to downshift into neutral when you come to a complete stop .
Maybe this is a new feature ?

There are a few combinations used to achieve a neutral like condition . Technically , the pcm could provide a neutral by momentarily turning off fluid to the C1 clutch . It would have the same effect as selecting neutral with the shifter . I just havnt seen any information on how it is done . Most auto transmissions will hold first gear while idling at a stop anticipating the driver will be releasing the brake to begin accelerating
