Hey everyone. I've been presented with the opportunity to get a FJ Cruiser but I'm a little torn on what to do. I have a 08 TRD OR DC that I love and my wife has a 05 CRV that I HATE. The shop my brother-in-law is a manager at just picked up a 07 FJ Cruiser with 93K on it. One owner and appears to be in really great shape. It books at $18k still. The CRV has 133k and books for about 4K. We were offered 12.5k with the trade. What are your thoughts? Good deal? I've researched and found info on the shuttering tranny (torque converter) and the "weak 3rd member" on SOME FJ in that year. I drove this one and it drives great. The front inside fender is also good, not bulged or cracked.

I'd would rather drive an FJ than a CRV. Sounds like you've looked into must of the problems that they have. The fender bulge and the transmission shutter are the main ones. The transmission shutter is prevented by keeping the transmission fluid changed. It's caused by the clutches in the transmission slipping when the fluid wears out. Maybe have the dealership flush it first. Then drain and fill every 30k after that. Make sure the use Toyota World Standard fluids, or it can mess things up. If you haven't yet, check the frame and undercarriage for rust. As for the price, $18k is kind of low for a FJ with 93k on the clock. I've see ones with 130k going for that much. So, 12.5K sounds pretty good. I love mine, it's one my favorite vehicles that I've owned so far.

Congrats! $16.5 is a nice price for 93K at the moment, with the crazy resale, if its clean as you say. Sure the trans or diff could go at any moment, but if its made it this far its probably a good one. At 100K EVERY fluid needs done if it hasnt seen any love. Coolant, diffs, PS, brake, ect....same as any 100K car really. If its a Yota dealer and you can get a trans fluid flush go for it...it isnt cheap. 12-16 quarts of WS fluid at $10-12 / quart plus the labor adds up. It can be done at home but it is a bit tedious. I personally just drain the pan and refill every 10K or so to keep introducing fresh fluid...doing so is only 4 qts at a time.
