    Hey guys and gals,

I'm going to be traveling with my soon-to-be wife to Costa Rica from 10/9-10/14. We'll be staying at Alma del Pacifico hotel in the Herradura Bay.

Any advice? Tips, tricks, things to look out for, things to see?

Furthest south of the border we've been is Playa del Carmen area...

No real tips, but I've been there 3 times, way off the beaten path in the mountains. The country is beautiful. Very humid. Rains a lot in the summer. Speaking Spanish helps when not in the big towns or cities.

Beautiful country. Watch out for the crocks, enjoy the parrots, howler monkeys are a hoot. Take a white water or kayak tour. The place is a meca for bird watchers. Zip-lineing was fun, make sure its a certified place. There are repelling places you can drop through waterfalls. Also many of the "roads" are gravel and unmarked. Take a GPS.

Definitely taking a GPS as we are renting a car. I did get a heads up from my bud to take a million pics of the rental as they may try to scam and charge for something that was already there. What did you use for GPS? I have a TomTom ONE (ancient by today's standards) a Galaxy tablet w/ GPS and an extra iPhone 4s I'll be taking.

I was looking at apps for offline/out of country navigation... Downloaded "Navmii" or something. Any recommendations?

don't really have any specific itinerary ideas since everyone's got their own interests (i'm all about the birds and other wildlife, YMMV) and I've never been to Herradura. If you're at or near sea level expect it to be hot and humid. There's nothing really appealing about San Jose so you'll probably want to get out of there asap. There are some shady folks around the airport so don't pack anything valuable in your checked bags (had a knife go "missing") and keep your eyes on your bags at all times once you get them from baggage claim.

Thanks for the tips guys- we had a blast. Food was so fresh and good, and the people were extraordinarily nice and friendly - I did not want to leave.

My friend went there last year. One night while staying in a hotel down there she said a monkey came up to the window and stole the bug screen off of it!
Whenever we hang out she says "pura vida" at least 5 times! Got any good pics of your trip to share?
