Over the weekend encountered something I haven't seen since my wife had her old VW Jetta.

This weekend headed out to the Fraser Valley for a camping trip with some friends. Headed up the old FSRs (Forest service roads) west of Harrison Lake. Along the way I passed Jeeps, older fords, chevy's, dodges and the likes but whenever I passed a Tacoma going in the opposite direction there was a communal wave on both sides. Like a welcome to the club, congrats on using your Tacoma for camping, driving old forest roads, etc. & not just picking up from soccer practice.

As I said not since my wife had her Jetta (it was a constant "VW Club" wave wherever we went) have I seen such a community around a certain brand or make of vehicle. People not knowing anything about the driver other than you drive the same vehicle.

When I got back on the highway the community ended though, saw a driver in a Tacoma gave him the friendly wave not thinking anything of it and he looked at me as if I was warning him of an oncoming speed trap or if he knew me.

I haven't had a mutual wave experience like I do with people driving old VWs and Porsches but I can say that I have a Rediculous number of people ask me about or compliment me on my truck. Even had an MNR officer quiz me on it at length because he was planning on buying one.

I know it's hilarious we would drive my wife's Jetta to go grocery shopping and other VW owners would wave. It's not like her car was special in any way shape or form, it was a bone stock mid 90's Jetta but if you had a VW that's just what you did, you acknowledged other VW owners.

Where the Tacoma yeah I got waves and gestures when we were on the back roads but back on paved roads it was another vehicle lost in the sea of other vehicles. It was nice to have that sense of community though.

That makes sense. I have never gotten a wave or anything on the streets in the lower mainland. The streets are saturated with Tacoma's. However I think every driver of a Tacoma has a mutual respect for one another, whether you see one in front or behind you. It's kind of like a cousin or distant friend something in that sense. Nothing needs to be said but I notice other Tacoma drivers will let you go through first on a 4-way stop quicker than a RAM 2500.
