Im going to take it to my local garage today and have it drained of oil and transmission fluid, and the right amounts put back in. I can only hope that the damage is limited to the transmission.

@gearcruncher may be able to help.

    Two issues:
    -Drained trans fluid
    -Overfilled motor oil

Drove for a few hundo miles; is his trans and engine toast?

    Thanks StAndrew

Stay away from the Toyota dealership when you have transmission problems unless you have warranty . All the dealer will do for you is replace the transmission with a new unit costing you BIG BUCKS . The dealer will not make any attempt to fix what you have .
Take your truck to a transmission shop , not a local garage .
There is nothing scary about solenoid codes but they need to be diagnosed correctly . Remove the transmission pan first to determine if there is metal particles plugging up the solenoids . If the pan is clean , look at the wiring from the computer to the solenoids . Run a resistance test on the solenoids to verify proper operation .
Is your transmission worn out ? this can only be determined by removing the transmission pan . A small amount of metal on the magnets laying in the bottom of the pan is considered normal .
Here is some reading for you https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...th-pics-for-second-gen-4-liter-trucks.289913/

Just a thought on solenoids, I accidently over filled my trans and kept getting solenoid codes and the trans would go into limp mode. Sucked out some fluid and it all started to work just fine.

Not an expert but before I take it to a shop I would drop the pan myself and check it out. If nothing seems out of the ordinary, I would fill it up properly and try it out. :notsure:

Was wondering the same thing... If he drained the tranny thinking he was draining oil (red fluid?) - and eventually put double the oil/fluid back into the engine.... if he put the appropriate volume of Oil into the engine, the truck would be drowning and likely smoking from it. At a minimum, I'd have a trained tech drain and flush the tranny - and then drain the engine/crankcase/filter and put the appropriate amount of fluids back into both then start it, check for codes as a start point.. A Couple of hundred miles with the tranny 1/2 empty had to really High Heat cycle the tranny's internals. Because of that it would be hard to trust it not to break down.

If unsure about a particular maintenance - and whether or not I can do it... I go out on the web and watch 4 or 5 videos on the topic for my specific model/year vehicle and familiarize myself as well as possible from various submitters / view points / camera angles. If from the videos make it seem beyond my ability or beyond the tools I have.... It goes to the shop.

Double oil might not make it smoke but it can damage the engine. The crank case will whip it into a froth and air bubbles will decrease the lubrication ability. Not much you can do about that though :notsure:

With 10-11 quarts in 4.5 to 5 quart engine, it would surprise me if oil wasn't coming out of the dip stick tube.. Or being thrown/forced into various places it didn't belong due to sheer volume. Hope we learn the rest of this story - to learn from this kind of mistake...

I am surprised that it is shifting at all. Fill it up and see how it does.
