DUDE! I've been everywhere looking for Big Horn Sheep and have NEVER seen them. They are some sneaky bastards. I'm still waiting for the day I can spot one.

If you want PM me and I'll tell you everywhere I've seen them.

    From Anza-Borrego

I think they've made a big comeback in the last decade or more. Dunno if it's dumb luck or just being out there so much in the past, but I seem to always find them in canyons and have had about a dozen encounters since '06. I've found lots of skeletons too.

I remember in 2010 was on my third attempt and 1/3rd up climbing Indianhead Peak in Anza-Borrego when I found this collared one below, it climbed with such grace and ease. The mountain is heavy-class 2 with some seriously sketchy class 3/4 climbing sprinkled in. Lots of loose rotten rock to make it treacherous. Makes my palms sweat thinking about it again. Just looked it up, it's 3,160' of pure climbing joy. It's the kind of mountain that blowed up my quads at least 1/4" after I was done healing. :) @DoorDing would like this, I think he is a climber.

Indianhead Peak in the center. That mountain is wicked!!!

In '06 while hiking in Borrego Palm Canyon which is below Indianhead Peak I found these ones:

    Such magnificent creatures.

    Yes on all accounts.

The climb is breathtaking. Best part is after your done you can eat like a champ in Borrego Springs, and stay in a hotel if you want. I remember after climbing and getting in my car I drove the 1 mile to the really yummy mexican restaurant. My body was welded to the drivers seat. Had to get me out with a pry bar and I walked like I was 98 years old. And I was very fit back then too. :)

Awesome! Good luck with the sheep spotting and be sure to take lots of photos like always.

We have Bighorn Sheep in the Okanagan and in the Rockies in BC. They are definitely majestic animals. Although not as good as mountain goats I'm still always amazed at how well and fast they can scale mountains. They seem to defy gravity and go places that would be a challenge for even an experienced mountain climber.

Near J-Tree NP. Another successful trip. So many great memories and pics for a three day trip. It's surreal.

I've never been, but always have wanted to. One of these years I'd like to make that trek, I was so :jellydance: of the East Coast guys that made it out that way for Rock Therapy last year. It's so not in the cards for me at this point, but it's definitely on my list of places to go!

Thanks. Very cool. Did not know that. We didn't see any sheep on this last trip but had a great time nonetheless.

Thanks! I had a lot of fun with the camera. We had such a good time for such a short trip. I'll share some more pics in another short post coming.
I too, like DD, recommend it. The Mojave desert is something special. I'm very accustomed to the Colorado desert, and in J-Tree there is a blending of the deserts when coming from the south, which is really neat. Love the Mojave desert.

The clarity that you capture in your photos is amazing. If you don't mind sharing, do you use an SLR or similar type camera?

Thanks. I'm using a Sony HX400V. They call it a bridge camera. Bridge cameras are cameras that fill the niche between the single-lens reflex cameras (SLRs) and the point-and-shoot camera.

I like it for a few reasons.
    1. Good glass
    2. No lens swapping.
    3. It can do 50x optical zoom.
    4. WiFi full resolution photo's out of the camera to my phone or computer, and it's fast.
    5. Integrated GPS, which geotags all the photos. pretty fast location acquisition of satellite signals.
    6. integrated flash
    7. good battery time
    Cons
    1. Not that good at very close macros
    2. Not sealed against dust.

I would love to step up to a mirrorless camera. I was intrigued by the NX1 by Samsung.

I was looking at your avatar earlier today. Looks like you were doing night photography with telephoto lens? Looking at it again, I can't identify what lens that is...

I need to start a savings account for a serious camera lens purchase. The amazing things you can do...
    That's a great camera!

It's a 4x5 inch wooden field camera. No such thing as a zoom lens for a large format camera, so I own 7 different prime lenses.

Very cool! Just read up a little bit on large format 4x5 cameras. http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/4x5.htm

    That's so neat!

Trash or treasure? The answer of course depends on the perception of the individual answering the question.

While traveling through the rough road up to Berdoo Canyon, north of Indio, we came across several very popular places for target shooting. And naturally, there was lots of debris left behind. This place is quite vast and dwarfs all other shooting areas I've seen in 20 years of desert travel.

Watching how children interpret the world around them is often quite amusing to me and serves as a daily lesson in human development.

My 5-year old saw these items and much, much, more, from the window of the truck, and associated them with "A broken car" She exclaimed, "Dad, stop the truck, I want to see these broken cars!" And so we did.

I think it's human nature to collect things, so I watched as she began to pick through the debris field and start a collection. I told her she could only take 5 treasures (what she calls them). It was neat to watch how she assigned value to certain objects. it could be the color, the shape, the material it was built from. I made sure of course that nothing dangerous was collected. When she asked me to hold them for her, I suggested she look for something to put them in. She found a purple plastic cap which they all fit into and she was happy solving her immediate problem. :D

The 3-year old responded much differently. She was like what the hell is this place? The only thing she wanted was a spent purple shotgun shell.

    DSC01912%252520-%252520Copy_c99c078b3c0dda9748a4b9f7d73efc169d93a165.jpg

It was fun diversion, and it was fun for them to explore the wold around them, even if it was just a bunch of discarded stuff.
