You don't need a press to get the u-joints out. I used a large enough socket placed below the joint with a socket that was thin enough to just fit on the top. Pounded it through with a hammer. Did the same with putting the new ones in. Similar to what this guy did in this video.

Yea its hard to hear it but that does sound like a ujoint. To make sure they are greasing right, run some grease through them and MAKE sure grease comes out of all 4 of the joints. If one of those joints doesn't have grease coming out, then it is blocked up. Thats what happened to one of mine. It was blocked for atleast 20,000 miles. In that picture of my joints, you can clearly see the one that has no grease in it, its all rusted. All of the bearings were rusted so thats the only spot where the sound was coming from.

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DOI8TQW?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

Spicer 5-153X for the front (2 total)

Kinda hard to tell like you say but I think I DO hear some "tinny" noise like cooked needles , right where you're finger is pointing would be a good place to start checking, put some blocks behind/in front of wheels put in neutral, & with both hands grasp the shaft (no, not your dick haha) by the joint & push/pull side to side/up & down, there should be no play here, if there is, change the joint, repeat process on all Ujoints..

Also do a visual , if you see any shiny metal between grease seal on joint & the joint itself, its bad, change it..

Balls of steel my friend to get the underneath while rolling, props to you !! That sounds like a Ujoint but wouldn't rule out carrier, was it ripped around the rubber ?

& I'll add (especially for those who mob) that being anal about checking & lubing after those long, hot, ball busting rides is pretty key to drivetrain longevity, heat kills...

The carrier "donut" was torn on both sides and dry-rotted, and I could feel the metal-on-metal grinding if I rotated the driveshaft by hand.

It may have been a bad U-Joint too though...I replaced both the mid and rear U-joints at the same time, and the rear was pretty dry in one cap...Go with Zerk fittings -
Don't get these pieces of shit that need the needle grease gun:

for the front? I didn't even think of the front. How hard is it to get that shaft out? The rear seems like it'd be easy to take out.

That tinny noise you hear is just my cage i'm pretty sure. The sound is more the low, grumbly repetitive wooo wooo wooo woooo sound

Mine doesn't make this sound at all so it probably isn't the carrier bearing
