the other day i was working in my basement office and heard something running. i assumed it was city worker or trash truck in street. i went to check and found my 97 Tacoma running in the garage. key was in ignition but was off. i believe it was when i hit thebrake that it shut off. does not haveauto start. was at mechanics a few weeks back and did the same for him. is it haunted? coinidence that i'm posting this on halloween. could be a real danger if i don't figure it out

Carbon monoxide build up in an attached garage could be deadly?? Other than that I'd say it just gives your truck character. Like Herbie. The Love Bug. Then again, Herbie would never try to kill you in your sleep...

There may be a short somewhere in the ignition system allowing power to the starter motor

I think I would be more concerned about driving down the road and your starter trys to engage your flex plate

Wow I think your truck is Haunted !!

I can think of no way this could happen by itself.

Once it does start why would the starter stop??

It is not like your turning the key??

It should stay engaged till some thing breaks

I can`t wait to hear how this plays out

your truck has to have auto start. that's exactly how my viper alarm acts. hit the orange * button twice in succession and it starts. once you hit the break pedal though, it shuts off cause it expects the key to be in and in the on position.

oo actually now that you mention it!!!!

yesterday a guy came into my parts store trying to figure out why his starter would engage while the car was already on and was put in reverse. some other mechanics that were there talked about it and came up with the possibility of it being the neutral safety switch for his automatic. maybe the neutral safety switch has a bad connection inside. OP, is your truck auto?

sounds like you have auto start, someone starting there car and its turning yours on. my clifford alarm if you dont put the key in the on position and hit the brakes it dies also, if it does it again put your key in the on position and see if it stays running.

It really does sound like auto-start like those have said. While running and without the key in the on position it will shut off when the brake is hit.

I actually had this happen to me before. Apparently with mine if you hit a certain button pattern it will start on it's own in like 6 hours or something, I guess if you want it to start while you're getting ready on it's own :notsure:. I miraculously hit this button pattern somehow and awoke at like 3 am to the sound of my truck starting. Gave me a heart attack as I grabbed my gun and ran out thinking someone was stealing it. Nope, just chillin there lol. Sure freaked me out though.

Definitely has remote start... at least thats how my trucks acts when you press the brake after starting it. Look behind the radio or under the dash for some type of control box. Are you the first and only owner?
