Had a mid 80's Dakota and took it to Jiffy Pube (didn't know any better i was young). Took it in, got it out ,stared it the oil light came on. The arsholes had drained & filled without putting the plug back in. Never Again

The guys doing oil changes are not the top tier SAE technicians.

At the dealership its the same guys that spray wash off the cars in the morning and pick up cigarette butts in the lot.

They will even move your vehicle out of position (with oil drained out) to put some VIP in front of you in service bay......30 seconds cant hurt much, right?

YOU care about your vehicle.....they only care about appearances. Never forget this.

When people call me cheap I explain to them I can put superior oil in my car vs their shitty jiffy lube oil for significantly less. I got curious and went on a couple of websites to prove my point and I was blow the fuck away. Jiffy lube charges 109.99 for penzoil ultra platinum. Max 5 quarts according to the fine print, anything more is extra charge. So thats 30 dollars of oil from walmart, and realistically who doesnt have a walmart near them? You can probably buy online and still save 60%. Their cheapo oil changes use formula shell. It's one of those shitty oils you will probably only find in gas stations. I've never even seen it at an auto store. Penzoil conventional(yellow bottle) will set you back 42 bucks. You can get the yellow bottle stuff at auto parts with a filter for 20 bucks usually through deals or something equally as good.

Meineke in their fine print says they use 5w30 only because fuck your car.

Honestly now that I know these facts, if anyone asks why I do my own oil changes and gives me shit for it I will explain to them that it's because I'm not stupid.

Just before I turned the truck off the oil light did come on. Then like I said under the truck the oil poured out probably at least 2.5 to 3 quarts worth. That makes me think enough oil was in the engine when I shut it down. Fingers crossed as of now she runs nice and quiet. Thanks again for the feedback.

Understand your rant, but Formula Shell is very good oil, FYI.

^Yea Toyota doesn't make the truck engines like it used to. 22R can run with a big hole in the oil pan.

This would've never happened if you had a 3rd generation.

Wait is that the other way around?

^No, the shop would've cracked the plastic filter housing and have all the oil drain out, since it's on the bottom of the engine...

Given all that's happened, I'm not sure I'd trust that place to top up the oil correctly, but your point is well taken.

I understand your position, and always do my own service work to boot....But a few of your "example" prices aren't quite realistic numbers. But I understand and appreciate you thoughts on avoiding quick change oil rip offs.

    OP: I'm sure it's fine...don't sweat it.

As others have said, you learned a valuable lesson regarding doing your own oil changes from now on. It's so cheap and easy to do on these trucks. I've been using full synthetic oil from Wally World and OEM filters....total cost around $30 every 7,500 miles

I would bet you'll have no troubles. And this truck is so ridiculously easy to change the oil on it's a no-brainer to do it yourself. I just did mine on Thursday, Wal-Mart Supertech synthetic and Purolator filter,$23 out the door.

Ok thanks again. I really appreciate the feedback. I want to keep the truck and will do my own maintenance on it. Like you said almost all the basic maintenance is simple. Thanks.

I would love to but I don't have the room. Although my truck is brand new and will utilize the 2 year toyotacare I always stick with my local mechanics who I've been with for years. They have always covered any problems that resulted from their mistakes and it's never an argument. If you can find a mechanic that does good work, is trustworthy, and will cover and admit when a mistake is theirs - never let them go.

    Stock for now...
There is a problem with the theory that no damage occurred - if that filter was loose enough to leak , it was also loose enough to introduce air into the oil fed to the bearings . I've seen firsthand damage from this , torn bearing surfaces and everything well out of tolerance although no noises were present . Upon tear down , complete rebuild needed . I'd have an analysis done on it asap - search out Blackstone as they provide free kits and they shop should be on the hook for the report . I would have a dealer or someone else perform the analysis sampling , don't let the tire shop do it .

I highly recommend the fumoto valve.

Without it, the oil change is easy, but with it, it's simple as hell. No tools needed and no mess.

Just put oil pan under valve. This is what I use since it has a grate on the top and a twist on cap : http://www.walmart.com/ip/10-QT-DRAIN-CONTAIN/20440557
    turn the valve
put empty Osarka water bottle under nipple of oil filter to catch excess oil when you unscrew oil filter to replace it ( while oil is draining). It fits nicely under the nipple and rests on the belt below it.
add new oil filter ( use the Toyota brand since its pre-oiled),
    Turn fumoto valve off
    Add 5.5 qt oil
    Reset oil maintenance light
Bring used oil and filter to autozone for recycling
Easy Peazy and no stress of some knucklehead messing up your truck

Because it was a loose filter, smoking just means oil leaked onto something hot. A loss of oil pressure would indicate that damage may have started to occur.
