Just bought my first vehicle in almost thirty years; been driving a company 4x4, and sharing my wife's car till last week. Now have a new 2015 TRD DBL CAB LB. My first question is what's the largest tire that will fit the spare 17" wheel and stow in the stock spare position below the bed? Wouldn't be opposed to removing the stops forward of the spare for more room. Planning on larger tires on the stock alloys on the ground, but want my spare tire to match in size. So going at it backwards, tires on the ground would have to match the new larger spare. I can measure all this out for an answer, but thought someone might already know.

A 33 can fit in the spare location with some modification but you cannot offroad with it down there as it will hit your differential.

If I mod to go with bigger spare, I'll just tie it down in the bed off road. Appreciate the specificity, Senor.

I ran my 255 85 16 down there for awhile. Didn't have any issues with it hitting the differential but it was awfully close to the exhaust on the side. Probably not very good for the rubber.

    Too few to list.
Yep, 285's can fit but it's a tight fit with modification but like everyone else said, close to exhaust and rear diff.

I just fit my 285 70 r17 spare in stock position without any modification. It's tight though...

    Thanks, Matt.

Off subject, I know, but wanted to say I don't think my mods will ever add up to what I see that you and others have done to their trucks. Who knows though, maybe over time. So far in the few days I've had my truck I've ordered a Snugtop shell, put in an OME bed mat, removed the TRD decals off the bed, removed the Toyota badge off the tailgate, removed the Predator tube steps, removed the front and rear mud flaps, installed a coded Pop & Lock tailgate handle, did the hose clamp addition to the passenger side tailgate hinge, and welded some large washers around the head of the torx screws that the tailgate cables attach to (so the cables can't be disconnected without a torx bit).

Here's an idea of what it looks like with a 265 75R16. Look at post #1609,1611 & 1613.

    Great info, Mike and Geekhouse.

Mike, the Countersteers are EXACTLY the wheels I'm planning on eventually. Haven't read your link to other posts yet, but I will. In the mean time are those Gunmetal Grey? Stupid question maybe, but my TRD came with 17" wheels, but when I buy aftermarkets I was thinking of going with 16" wheels but taller tires with more sidewall like you guys (I envision a 3" lift down the road); will 16" wheels fit my hubs?

Sorry to drag up an old thread but I figured I'd post here rather than starting a new one...

I have 305/70/17 (34") Nitto Terra Grapplers and I'd like to get my spare underneath in the stock location. The spare is pretty worn and I measured the diameter close to 33". I put it underneath and right now it looks like the trailer hitch is the only thing preventing it from fitting:
    20151031_105329_88c1c1fa9d57b2128f4729cc5e1e37a3a5a0ea58.jpg

I can pull out the trailer hitch but I'm somewhat concerned about the exhaust and rear differential as people have already mentioned. How much does the rear differential actually travel up and down, and how much clearance should it have?

As an alternative, what would be the next closest size that would fit underneath, fit my 17" rim, and match close enough in size to my 34" tires?

    Thanks in advance.

265/75/16 is what i have underneath my Tacoma for the spare. It's tight and is a BFG Rugged Terrain tire(not a Rugged Trail aka fail tire).

Curious to see how a 255/80/17(pizza cutter) tire will fit down there. Guess we will find out as soon as I buy mine and try my spare down there.
By the looks of things it seems like overall diamter(height) of the tire would place more a roll than the width of the tire. Mine will surely be more narrow than a typical 33"(285/75).

Old thread but i just fit a 305/70r17 up under.. removed the two spare tire guide arms off the support cross member and it fits snug against the frame like an inch away from the drivers leaf. Is about 4 inches from the exhaust and 2” from the brake line and parking break mount on the stump. Rests against the hitch bar…. The spare tire hoist thing struggles to crank it up but it holds it.. bfg km2’s and bead lock steelies..
