i'm on the fence but very close to buying my Tacoma with the 6 speed man. I've had bad luck with 1st year models and would like to wait but with such few manuals being made I'm worried that it will soon be discontinued and i wont be able to get one. What are your thoughts on the future of this trans?

No one wants one anymore. The only reason I have a 2016 Tacoma is because my local Toyota dealer had one on the lot and I got lucky on a late Saturday afternoon they just put the truck on the lot that day. Test drive .. got out of the driveway and into 3rd gear SOLD. BOOM

I can remember when it was the other way around and all cars were manual and only folks with disabilities drove automatics. Automatics came out after WWII for all the Vets that couldn't drive a manual anymore!! My dad was one of them - not a vet but he was disabled with Polio.

I would suspect manual trannys will become an option that we will have to special order and pay extra for. I'd be OK with that, I get it. Everyone wants a car that drives itself. Not me I want to be connected to my truck and thru my truck connected to the road/trail thru my right AND left foot and both hands and brain. The 2016 Taco with manual tranny does that for me in spades, and I can haul shit too.

What are you worried about? Highly unlikely Toyota will discontinue a manual until AT LEAST the next gen. While they are the minority, manual transmissions are still a selling point and the fact that Toyota still offers one shows there is a demand. Toyota realizes people who love to drive love manuals. I say buy it. Besides, it is an extra security feature from some punk kid stealing your truck.

Or possibly get more for it down the road with the right buyer because they will be rare. I searched for a long while to find a good manual trans reg cab.

Also, most people say the manual drives MUCH better than the auto. More low end grunt and no auto downshifting like crazy every time you hit the gas on a hill. I'd much prefer a manual, but they wont offer it on the DCLB.

Why do you care it's the same trans since 05 they are pretty tough units. If that's what you want buy it, so what if it does get discontinued. I have one and tow with it I can use 6th while the guys with the automatics are locking out O/D.

It is a brand new transmission. Both auto and manual. Not carryover.

I'm actually concerned that if i wait till the 2017 model they may not be making a manual anymore. I ran into this issue when i bought my Acura. I waited on the TL till the TLX was released only to discover that Acura completely stopped using a manual transmission. I don't want that to happen when they start producing the 17's.

Unlikely to happen. They have been making them forever.

A little of this and a little of that.
I think it is a sales number issue. As long as X amount of buyers purchase a manual, then it continues. If Toyota has to drastically discount the manual trucks in order to sell them, it'll be the end.
FWIW, I enjoy my three pedal truck.

Yup. Manuals are tough to find on the secondary market. I won't drive an automatic.

My last truck with manual trans was a '79 Chebbie 3-on-da-tree.

You couldn't give me a truck today with a manual trans.

They should have marketed it as 'The somewhat Different' 2017 Tacoma.

The problem isn't that Toyota offers no manual transmission; the problem is that they pair the manual to configurations that many reject out of hand.

If you like 4-cylinder engines -- Great! There's a manual for you.
If you like fake hood scoops -- Great! There's a manual for you.
If you like short beds -- Great! There's a manual for you.
If you like 2wd all the time -- Great! There's a manual for you.
If you prefer double cab over access cab -- Great! There's a manual for you.

    But --

if you require a V6 long bed 4x4 Access Cab without a lame-ass skewp -- Toyota has fucked you over (at least in the States). There is no such configuration.
