I've read it's a real bad idea to weld on the engine oil pan while it's still bolted to the vehicle, but what about the transmission oil pan? Planning on installing a bung for a temp sensor if it makes a difference.

Without pulling and cleaning the pan as best you can I don`t know how you would get a good weld.

Then because transmission fluid is flammable you stand the chance of catching things on fire

This is one of those things only you can make the call !!

Like pulling the negative cable when welding on a vehicle

Always going to be both sides.

Myself I would pull it just to not have to be welding overhead in a uncomfortable position .

Besides if I have any luck most times it is bad.

The call is simple. Remove it. The engine is filled with flammable or combustible fluids. Heat transfers during the welding process. The proximity to the surrounding areas is too close to take a chance. Besides, even if trans fluids are not likely to catch fire, the transmission is highly suseptable to damage from heat and the fluid and interior parts can degrade which would be a big worry too. Nothing good will happen to gaskets and plastic and rubber parts.

That's pretty much what I figured, I just needed to hear someone else say it. Thanks for the input.
