First Oil change

Don't the messenger, just stating what's in the manual.

 

Hah ... I just checked the manual and saw that... so original question is, why wouldn't I use synthetic oil? more below...

Oh don't worry, AR still under the back seat. Just wondering why would you recommend not using synthetic oil, that's all.

 

Is 5w-20 synthetic only as well?

Edit: apparently it is, so it's a 5,000 mile interval if you use 5w-20, ignore the non synthetic comment above.

Edit 2: now I'm finding non-synthetic 5w-20, I don't know what to believe anymore.

 

Not recommending it, just clarifying that if you stray from 0w-20, the manual calls for 5,000 mile intervals.

 

He he he .... that's what I've come to conclude as well. Well... @TXTee said it best... "Your truck, your money: do what you want."

 

Manual also states 0w-20 has to be used at least every other interval if you stray.

 

From the maintenance Guide -
Change every 10,000 miles with OW-20 for normal use.
Change every 5,000 miles if do this excessively, and not "occasionally".

• Driving on dirt roads or dusty roads.
• Driving while towing, using a car-top carrier, or heavy vehicle loading.
• Repeated trips of less than five miles in temperatures below 32 degrees F.
• Extensive idling and/or low speed driving for a long distance such as police, taxi or
  door-to-door delivery use.

I'm thinking - maybe split the difference and change every 7,500 miles.

 

I'm more concerned about the first oil change. Becuase If the factory does put some additives that may be beneficial for the life of engine. I'm wondering if it's better to leave it for 10 k before my first oil change. Only after that would I chsnge every 3-5k. Obviously of they just put in the same thing dealer does, I would do my first 1 at 1k. Then every 3-5 after that.

 

In other words the engine is broken in within a few minutes of a test fire? The manual calls for a break in period, if one chooses not to abide by this that doesn't mean you will have engine failure. It is simple a safe guard.

I'm willing to get an oil analysis done at 500, 5k, and 10k; someone else want to wait until 10k?
If we get a large enough sample size, we can have more than just opinions.

 

Is the initial oil Toyota uses at the factory anything special? Or is it just the usual standard full synthetic type oil that they recommend for all other oil changes?

if that is the case, change it when YOU feel it needs to be changed based on whatever YOU believe.

 

For anyone changing their own oil on a V6 with tow, with filter change mine took less than 5.5 qts to be full. Manual states 6.3qts. So, maybe start on the low side before running then engine a bit a rechecking.

That is a HUGE difference, and more than a little alarming.

I will do as you suggest, and proceed cautiously.

I did mine and it was spot on per the manual. I put in 6 quarts to start and then added a small amount after a day.

 

This would be the best way to know.
