Yep, the torn rubber is the game ender for carrier & I hate those joints, stupid place to load the grease...

I dont know how you guys used the hammer trick, it took a lot of work to even use the press and press out my u joints. The first time I had a bad U joint I was getting a bad vibration while under throttle at about 55-65. This recent time sounded like wire wrapped around the drive shaft, slop when shifting from park to drive to reverse, and a slight vibration too. It honestly takes one time feeling a bad U joint and you'll know after that when you get a bad vibration from a U joint. Autozone had them in stock, apparently moog is supposed to make quality U joints, $24 a piece.

Yeah I have the same sounds.
I also have "wheel hop" in the rear. I'm not sure how to describe it better but from 30-45mph if i'm lightly on the gas I sometimes get a really bad shake.

If you've ever launched a FWD car and had the front wheels spin continuously...that is what it feels like but in the rear. I'm trying to find my GoPro to see if the carrier bearing is the culprit.

The rear is easy. The front is just a little bit harder because the nuts and bolts are difficult to get to. Still on a scale of 1 to 10 of 10 being very difficult. I put changing out joints at a 4. Not hard at all if you have basic tools.

That wheel hop you have is probably axle wrap. I had some of that wheel hop when I had OME Dakars, but when I put on the All-Prop Expo springs, the wheel hop went away completely.

@PerfectTekniq maybe we have he same problem then. I don't have the wheel hop but it sounds sort of like axle wrap to me.

@MrGrimm Well, I think I will stop at the auto store on my way home and pick up 5 u-joints. I am getting the truck ready to sell so I don't want to wait for the ones to order online. This is basically the last thing I need to do before I can sell it.

I think I will try the rear 3 first, see if it goes away and if not then I'll do the front 2..if that doesn't work..taking it to my mechanic on monday! Thanks for all the info Dean. Are you still rockin my old bed sides?

Jeezus, that's cheap on the carrier, the forum (san diego members & others from other regions) all chipped in & got me 1 a few years back & it was $200 & change from Toyota...

so I got the 5 u-joints I need, but I keep thinking this cant be the problem. The key reason being if I am coasting in neutral I don't hear it. This noise only occurs if I am in gear.

If it was u-joints or the bearing I would still hear it because they drive shaft would still be spinning, even in neutral...right?

I really hope it isn't something in the transfer case

I would think with no load on the ujoints it wouldnt be as loud.

ok, yeah that is certainly a possibility. I already have the new u-joints and they weren't that expensive. I should just start with the rear ones.

I currently have Dakars. Thanks for your input. I hope it goes away when I replace the carrier bearing. I don't want to buy a whole new leaf pack to fix the hop. I might have to hit you Doug if you're still making them. ;). FYI I just went to Claremont Toyota and they had the carrier bearing assembly priced at ~$230.

I'm thinking of taking out my carrier support bearing and u joints to inspect. I have a loud noise between 30-40 mph coming from the passenger/rear. Replaced both front wheel bearings and carrier bushing. Thinking it could be rear wheel bearings or driveshaft.

Is that carrier the same part as this one?
    https://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=2954640&cc=1445515&jnid=512&jpid=0
    http://www.amazon.com/Dorman-934-40.../dp/B005VTT5LK/ref=cm_cr_pr_bdcrb_top?ie=UTF8

It seems the Dorman carrier is not very good. These guys are asking $240 for OEM: http://www.nextdayauto.com/2014-toy...ort-bearing-v6-4-0-genuine-w0133-1779052.html
So I'm scared of even trying the Dorman part. What is the quality of those from san diego friction?

I dont know about those. The one I got was marked with spicer and toyota logos. The last carrier I bought on the cheap was exactly that, cheap. I had to replace it after 6k in miles.
I would call spicer to be sure of the part numbers. Theyll need the part number of you drive shaft. If the sticker is gone they should be able to figure it out with make/model/year. Or you can give your vin # to the dealer and get the p/n then go back spicer to make sure. Dont forget to get a new yolk nut. Then.. go save some money here http://sandiegofriction.com/

Dorman is really hit or miss. I used then on my old bronco, water pump, timing chain cover, brakes.., without to much trouble.

Avoid the Moogs, they have this tiny grease fitting that is next to impossible to use, even with the correct tool. I had to replace my universal near my diff and had to use the Moog. Now when I grease the driveshaft I have to unscrew the grease "fitting" and just squirt in grease through the threaded hole.

So, turns out it's my rear axle gears. We jacked the rear end up and spun the tires and you can hear a grinding noise in the third member.

I think I am going to fork the money out to get it fixed before I sell the truck. I'll have better luck selling it if I do.
