2005 Tacoma, should I use a different oil than what's currently in my truck? I have a Big-O sticker saying it has Titan 5w30? Suggestions?

From what I read on this website, since the truck has 190k miles don't use synthetic unless the truck is already using it so I'm trying to figure out whats best. thanks!

Seriously... you are about to receive a barrage of opinions from about 75,000 pseudo-chemists.

    Here is what you have:

    http://www.fuchs-schmierstoffe.com/...inery/engine-oils/engine-oils-passenger0.html

    Here is what I use:

    OIL: https://mobiloil.com/en/motor-oils/mobil-1/mobil-1

    FILTER: https://mobiloil.com/en/oil-filters/performance-oil-filters

Mobil 1 5w-30 full synthetic and a Mobil High Flow filter; I change every 8000 kms and my tuck and I are still running just fine.

    Don't over-think it.

thanks for the links, if my oil is synthetic I'll be using your setup

there are 8 Titan 5W-30s on there, any idea which one it'd be? are they all synthetic? thanks again

edit: the product pages don't say what they are, but google images shows bottles w/ synthetic so I'm assuming they're all "synthetic" and will go with Mobile 1

Fuck if I know. Not trying to be a prick, but just change your oil and then you'll know for sure.

    Like I said: Don't over-think it.

PS: ... and while you're under there, don't forget to give it a 3" Icon lift on 285's so that you won't have to jack up the truck in the future.

    ;)

You have an owner's manual and it tells you what type to use, something like API approved motor oil, 5w-30 weight and the change intervals. If it says nothing about it being synthetic or not, you can use eithe and any quality name brand oil. It is really that simple. Any more concern then that is unnecessary. It probably has an oil change interval of 5000 miles. If that is your plan, using any thing soecial is your choice but it will have little effect on the life of your engine.

In case anybody else without experience crosses this thread, the answer is: yes you can switch between oil and filters without cause for concern. In addition you can go from synthetic to conventional

My initial question was rudimentary and not explained by the manual. But I appreciate the tidbit leading me to find out that it's safe to go from synthetic to conventional

Just make sure that you pour in something that is relatively slippery.

But seriously, that's an old wives tale. You can put in synthetic or not-synthetic whenever you feel like it, with no ill effects.

Some of the *ancient* (i.e. 70's) synthetic oils may have been pretty good at messing up rubber seals, but that isn't something you need to worry about any more.

Your truck says 5w30, so put in 0, or 5, or 10w -- 20, 30, or 40. Typically, aim for heavier oil (bigger numbers) where the climate is warmer than "normal", like southern US. You can aim for lighter oil where it is incredibly cold, like Canada. The first number refers to pumpability at low temperature, the second number refers to the viscosity at operating temperature.

To be safe, just pick ANY 5w30 of whatever brand makes you feel most warm and fuzzy. Seriously, just make sure you put in something slippery and you'll be fine.
