I am headed to Cape Lookout next year, Not sure exactly when as of now.

Wife and I ventured out to OBX in Nags Head for our honeymoon and fell in love with the place.
I have never been a real "Beach Vacation" guy. But have been changed slightly, lol...

After running into a guy with a Ram Quad Cab lifted Ram on 37s telling me about the island beach he was on for three days. I knew we needed to bring the Tacoma back and camp out there. He had pictures that made me smile. We also got to drive on the public beach north of Corolla on highway 12, Enjoyed that a lot and then realized the NPS has very remote beaches and permits available good for a year.

Anyways, I am looking for any and all advice anyone who has been to Cape Lookout, and/or beach 4x4 camping can lend me. I was a boy scout and we camped a bunch but in the wilderness of WNC, not ENC sands.

Like am I better off with a ground tent, that way the truck is free to move around and we can drive and explore as we have quite a few miles of shoreline. Or invest in a RTT.
Should I get a bug net type canopy and plan on cooking and eating in it.

I am wanting feedback from you guys who knowing if you were going again, what advice would you give me to help out.

Kind of just looking for good advice.

This is where we are headed. Almost 20 miles of beach to explore and we will be camping on also. Wohoo!!!

Have camped many times at cape lookout. It's great. Not in the last couple of years though. You need really long tent stakes, i used wood survey stakes but i am a surveyor. You can expect strong winds and use extra tethers to keep your tent where you place it. It's a great place to camp and fish. If you are going in the summer, take bug spray. Black flies can be tough as well as mosquito's.
