Mine only has 13,000 miles on it and almost a year old but the rust, my god the rust is coming in crazy amounts. I had to replace the rear exhaust hanger last month, and before anybody says anything I do wash my truck about once a month and by wash I mean bow to stern, top and bottom.

Going to go ahead and apologize for the shotty photos.

That looks fairly normal being in an area that uses salt. What do you mean you had to replace the exhaust hanger?

As in the exhaust hanger rear of the axle, separated from the exhaust tube due to corrosion had to ground down and rewelded. Also don't live in an area where they salt the roads.

You live close to the ocean, correct. Thats worse than road salt.

If your hanger decayed in 1 year from corrosion, your truck is fucked.

that makes my OCD act up.

Seen a fellow here in worse shape, turn his almost back to new with some elbow grease and paint..

Yeah, get to the fluid film or similar asap, until you repair it proper .

Driving it down the beach, OP? Maybe on "roads" through the marsh? Back a boat down a ramp into the salty/briny water? Reason I ask is because in Georgia, the prevailing wisdom is to never buy a used vehicle from Florida because of those potentialities. I believe I'd be trying to sell that truck, buy another, and keep it the hell away from the ocean.

That's far from normal. I live close by and work practically on the water. I have had to do a couple touch ups on some welds so far. But not near as bad as yours.

Get it oil sprayed underneath. Had a rav4 before my truck, came on 20yrs old of running salted winter roads and looked like brand new. Get it done before its to late, 3 days after buying my 2015 I covered the whole underside in the oil spray. And spraying it again this week before the winter hits.

I lived out on Oahu for three years, about 5-6 miles away from the beach. Obviously, Oahu doesn't use salt on the roads. However, I had a '97 Wrangler that had rust completely throughout the entire thing - body, frame, everything. The previous owner had it parked on the street its entire life on Oahu. It ended up being a total loss - there was just too much to go back, so I just wheeled it until it couldn't go anymore.

Moral of the story - living by the ocean is MUCH worse for a vehicle than salted roads. ESPECIALLY if you park the vehicle outside.

I'd find a way to park it inside and/or cover it, and I'd definitely invest in some sort of rust treatment for that frame, even if you have to do it yourself.

I disagree about living near an ocean being worse than living where they salt the roads. CA cars are known for having far less rust than East Coast cars, cars from the Rockies, etc. even though the major CA population centers are near the coast. Living on the beach might be an exception.

The only way you're going to truly protect the truck from rust, is dunk the entire truck in an olympic sized pool of rust protectant. Or do a complete frame off restoration and then dunk the frame in the pool.

You could spend a shit ton of money on rust protection - but you're only covering areas you can see/reach. Could you be chasing your tail for nothing? How much $$ are you willing to throw at it?

Maybe you should ponder the question to your local Toyota dealer....just for the hell of it. Since you're under warranty... (not that you'd want this) but maybe there could be a TSB where they apply that rust coating underneath for free? I dunno...just a thought.

I bought mine new off the lot here in town. Its funny both my 07 and my 15 have needed more touch ups then my other Toyotas in a short time frame.

Oops quoted wrong person in my prior post. You'd think Toyota would've gotten it together by now in terms of rust.

I noticed a few rust spots on some welds within the first few weeks of ownership. To combat it heading into winter I've Fluid Filmed the everything I could including using the 360 degree spray wand for the boxed front part of the frame. I'm all set to go and will see what it looks like next spring.
