Widest tire without lift

I have a off road that I want to run wider tires on.
I mostly need a tire thats good in the sand so I'm looking for something with a more aggressive tread pattern than all terrains.
I really like the baja claw mickey thompson's.

Anyways how wide can I go without a lift or backspacing?
Anybody using backspacing without a lift to fit wider than stock?

I didn't think big open tread patterns were best in sand. I thought they just dug holes. I could be wrong.
