I have no idea what "good" flash lights are but I'm thinking about buying one... This thread recently helped me finally buy a nice knife so flash light is next...

Really for under 100 bucks is there any most haves?
Like I know I want one thats led and small. but thats about it, I want it to reach as far as possible and rechargeable sounds cool as long as it can also take batteries.

So what Lumens should I be looking for? around 1000?
    Any other just most haves?
    Brands to go for?
    Brands to avoid?

I'm a big fan of my nitecore infilux IFE1. Magnetic control ring with no detents so there are no fixed settings, and goes down to half a lumen which really comes in handy when you are already used to the darkness and don't want to blind yourself.

I don't have any red filters in stock, but you could order one here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nitecore-Re...hash=item27faaa0af3:m:mu3q0mcPcJFERw21AmFYEvQ

You'll want the diffuser if you ever get a flat in the middle of the night.

No need to have the absolutely most expensive, or best one per se.

    One that is handy:

    maglite_zpsy6weo3he_28a5097ed26902a078aa65b1620323666da9305d.jpg

... and works when you need it; and it came with red/blue/clear filter lenses. Not that I cared.

    My .02

PS: Cost $40 CAD ... I'm saving up my pennies for more serious lighting mods.

I keep 3 flashlights. Different purposes.

Thrunite pen light Ti4- runs off 2 AAA batteries. Highest setting is 252 lumens.

Fenix E35 Ultimate Edition- runs off 2 CR123's. Highest setting is 900 lumens

Fenix TK35 Ultimate Edition- runs off 4 CR123's. Highest setting is 2000 lumens.

All 3 are kick ass lights

IMO Fenix lights are a good value. I have quite a few. Just wished they made a pocket rocket that would surpass my EDC 4/7s cr2 mini. Awesome torch for its size.

True that but that thrunite pen light has been my go to edc light for a while. And being that it runs off of aaa's it really is more convienient. The other two are way too bright to be shining around the neighborhood.

ha this is impossible to answer what is the best flashlight....if you can find it please tell a dozen other forums
including candlepowerforums and budgetlightforums because they cannot answer it either

    But I will try:

    I assume vehicle light

    I assume extreme storage temperatures

I assume you stick it in the truck and forget it is there for 5 to 10 years
and you live in the arctic or you live in saudi arabia where it is blazing hot

and YOU NEED THAT LIGHT now

    You want:

    1)
---an LED flashlight from a big maker (zebralight, fenix, klarus, nitecore, sunwayman...etc)
    2)
--it is powered by two or more CR123 size cells (many 18650 lights can take two cr123 in place of
the 18650 if they are built that way, or four cr123 in place of two 18650...just be sure the specification says you can)
    3)
---and for the cells themselves you want, specifically Panasonic BR 2/3 series
    Chemistry:
    Lithium Poly-carbonmonofluoride

These BR cells are super special non-your-mom-and-pop cell...

they can handle sitting at 180F for ten years, or -40F...and then be expected to work.
they can handle heat and sub-freezing very well. the best 'store and forget' cells currently made.

These Panasonic BR series specifically are used in space and missile systems as battery backups because
there is no more reliable DC power cell that handles punishing temps and just sits there and is ready to go and won't leak or outgas or
do anything other than function when demand requires. Aside from that they are CR123 and they are not
magic, if you use them up you'll need more cells.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now having said all that I would personally have (if I only had one option)
Zebralight H32 series headlamp, single cr123 powered, the cr123 would be BR series

    http://www.zebralight.com/H32w-CR123-Headlamp-Neutral-White_p_153.html

because the headlamp allows you to use both hands for whatever else

this headlamp has 446 lumens, down to moonlight .05 lumens. moonlight mode lasts weeks and won't destroy night vision to dark adjusted eyes. looks far too dim in the day, but if you wake up in middle of night and just need a light to stumble around and look for something, .05 lumens is plenty and barely drains the batteries

The best flashlight is the one in your hand when the boogeyman comes.
