All I can say is that my '08 Mustang GT's engine was noticeably louder using RP than M1, especially at idle. I switched back and quiet again. Not sure if that's indicative of anything but I've stuck with M1 for all my vehicles since.

Pennzoil is now 100% synthetic. It's derived from natural gas.

Technically anything created from base oil through cracking, esterfication, or other chemical processes can be called synthetic. That's what the court case was about. Mobile wanted only oils created from lighter products, and not cracking, to be able to carry the synthetic label because they cost more and M1 wanted to be able to charge more. They lost to Castrols control of the market and now everything but Pennzoil is not what you would think it is. BTW cracked base oil is just fine as a synthetic, but under stress it's not as good at retaining it's chemical properties. @chris4x4 did some testing and so have several others on bobistheoilguy.

Oh, and OP your article looks like it was written in the 80's. Everyone has changed their formula for synthetic a few times since then.

Taste test is reserved for gear oil only, that's why gear oil bottles come with a sharp nozzle tip.

Just surfing the web and found this. I understand it's 9 years old, would be nice to find a newer article. Maybe you can take some time, and find an independent non biased oil test to post!

Changing the filter is actually more important than the oil.

"The 4-ball test (ASTM D4172) is often used as a screening test for many different lubricant types that contain antiwear additives or similar base oil properties. Other tribo-mechanical bench tests are often used as well, including the Timken Test (ASTM D2782) and the Pin and V-Block (ASTM D2670). Because engines have different contact geometry, loads, metallurgy and speeds, numerous bench tests and test protocols are needed. It is not uncommon for several oils to be tested using two such methods and to find that the performance rankings between the oils to reverse (no correlation). This is why, among other reasons, Passenger Car Motor Oils and Heavy Duty Oils (diesel crankcase) are tested in actual engines using controlled methods such as ASTM D5533 Sequence IIIE and D5302 Sequence VE.

    Jim Fitch, Noria Corporation"

In other words, this test is meaningless. Also pay attention to the oil weights. A 0w20 oil and a 20w50 from the same manufacturer are going to have different additive packages and base stock properties.

Autozone price matches it if you show them the walmart ad online. Just did it two weeks ago as I'm not a fan of walmart myself. I purchased the mobil 1 full synthetic EP and I even saved money on my mobil 1 filter because autozone gives a discount when you buy the oil and filter together.

You know looking on the back of these pretty color oil bottles! You see all the specifications it meets, with numbers and letters. They all seem to be the same, with the exception of price! Wonder what's the next level of requirements the Automotive Industry is Demanding and how do they test he oil?

On the back of all those different pretty color bottles. They all meet or exceed current manufacturer's requirements! So which one exceeds the requirements significantly?
