I assume you are talking about a TRANSFER case. Not sure if this applies to the newer chain-driven cases, but my gear-driven case had what I think was called a 'detent ball' . It needed to be removed to allow a twin-stick conversion. I did not do the work to remove the detent ball, I a local shop do it.

There are castings for the shift rods
2 - springs oval piece round both ends
Think from there. A channel in the casting for the springs and oval plugs both ends for acess

    Ball-- spring--detent ball--spring--ball
Centre the detent. Install case cover
If in place correctly cover drops down
okinstall springs each side of detent add ball each end install plugs each end
Transfercase shifter should be in neutral.
Good thing my son showed up and has better eyes then me
    No 4- wheel drive. Over a ,30 roll pin/
    Shear-pin!
When pin is sheared shifter feels like is is going in correct pattern - kinda loose tho-just never 4-whl. Dr.
The rods have a fork that you push down spring on rod and the hole in the fork and rod will align when pushed down hard enough install roll pin/Shear
    pin. Fork stays down slowing
Shifter to properly move rods forward or back to engage the 2h. 4h. 4l
    Fully
    Thanks much
