I have a clay chiminea and it's awesome, but I wish it was twice as big. The pot is about 2' in diameter, and 3 or 4 people around it need to crowd close for heat. I'll eventually just build a fire pit out of pavers and a steel liner.

I would seriously think about making a brick pit if it were me. My wife and I went through about 4 of those before deciding that they weren't worth it. They rust out quickly and you can only use really small pieces of wood that burn out within several minutes. We built one out of those trapezoidal shaped bricks, then later on decided we wanted a patio to go around it. The pit is 5 courses high, with 2 underground, didn't cost more than one of those temporary ones.

Go find an old tractor-trailer truck rim and surround it with pavers to dress it up. It'll out last you.

Here we go, pix of our fire pit-
A pair of New Holland steel wheels taken off for rubber replacement.

    [IMG][IMG]

And if you notice the 2nd pic, this gets used quite a lot  Plus it is still in 2 pieces so when "The Boss" wants to clean it out ,even she can lift  without disturbing the outer stoneware ;)

I went with a built in one as well. Easy project and fun to do.

I used the brake drum from an off road logging truck and surrounded it with pavers, it will last 200 years.

We used to have a Chimnea which worked nicely. Filled with sand and left it outside 24/7. After many many years, they need some paint....but its a nice/cheap alternative and you can throw it in the truck and take it camping if you like.

For a more permanent install - you can't beat a round paver fire pit. They're just a whole lot nicer!!! Just this past summer, we had our patio redone. We cheated - had gas lines run out to the fire pit. We never have to buy or chop wood again! ;)

Nice idea and WOW on plumbing with gas, smart and efficient...

We will stick with picking up tree debri! It is Florida and with dozens of trees used for canopy in the development and on our walking trail, keeping the firebox full is not hard  plus I use the broken or "bad" parts from Con's pallet collection. If we can not use it for art it will be used for "Riva' watchin"
