Well said on everything. There are definitely tricks to getting a campsite on busy weekends.

Have you ever backpacked down to Havasu Falls? OMG! It's a killer spot. I've actually done it twice. And if you go, you have to day-hike all the way down to the Colorado River. The iridescent blue-green water of Havasu Creek blending into the muddy Colorado is trip for sure.

Nick did you mention in another thread something about more road noise from your tires recently? I thought I read that somewhere, but not sure if it was you or if you were responding to the post.
I've recently started having the same issue. Sounds and feels slightly different from only a month ago or so. I'm starting to wonder if it's possibly the wheel bearings and not the tires.
Anyway, I wanted to ask if the the TC tabs were part of your solution. I've also noted that my tabs are folded over and cams are frozen on both sides. Think I may be leaning towards the TC tabs as part of the solution but need to check out the bearing too at some point just to hopefully rule that out.

I've been checking the tires everyday, I don't seem to see and uneven wear happening yet. I do think I need to bring it in to get the alignment checked though.

The Toyos have a classic hum sound being a mud terrain and I don't mind it, but I know they're only going to get louder with time. When I first got them they were still a lot quieter than the beat up duratracs! :) My wife likes the hum, she says it puts the kids to sleep faster. :notsure:

Anyways, the tires are impetus for the sound proofing project that is underway now. When my youngest talks while we're on the interstate I can barely hear her sometimes, she has a soft voice, and I'm tired of asking her to speak up. So sound proofing project is really for me.

The cam tab gussets are just part of "fix broken stuff first" philosophy. I had already fixed them once with a hammer and punch, but it didn't hold. :D

My tires were / are rubbing the LCA and frame (don't know how when or why yet), I think it's because the cams have moved on top of the tabs. So fixing the tabs may fix that too. Dunno.

I've done a lot of contemplation on the concept of pulling the bolts and cams out (one at a time) and I feel it's quite safe to do now, the reason for this, is that the lions share of the trucks weight is on the knuckle & spindle / shock, whereas the LCA frame attachment points act as guides for travel. If I wasn't getting the new tabs welded on this week, I'd pull the bolt and cam, and hammer punch the tabs back and reinstall cams and bolts and go for an alignment. Be done in 45 minutes.

Bad wheel bearing makes a hum sound. If the bearing is real bad, you can jack the front corner and wrestle the tire, if there is play in it, bearing is way shot.

Quick update. I got one of the doors mostly done today. Words can not aptly describe how amazing my door sounds when I close it. The "thud" of the closing door screams luxury!

-Lots of prep work cleaning dust out.
-I installed the Noico sound deadner stuff (automotive butyl and foil), I'll call it mat. It's 0.65 lbs / 1 sq ft.
-I covered all the inside of the outer door skin with mat.
-I covered most of the backside of the inner skin with mat.

    DSC02555_b57a64b9f4b31d44b8f5e261fd526735dccd9704.jpg

To finish this door, I need a filler material to fill the holes, rigid plastic, sheet metal, etc., then a little more mat, some foam, and then the mass loaded vinyl (MLV). I have everything but the filler material.

Here is a shot of MLV. I got a 4'x10' roll. Shit is dense, 40lbs total.

Best sound barrier there is for the application! It's 1/8" thick and 1lb /sq. ft.!

Also, the JBL speaker is a real disappointment to see up close. It super light weight and small. :(

It's still going back in, but maybe one day I'll upgrade.

Are you doing the TC cam tabs yourself? Doing this sounds like a big job.

    :)

It was probably twice as hard as it should be because like most projects ( i got a break on the weather seal one :cookiemonster: ), the kiddos were there. :ballchain:This time they pretended to go on a camping trip. The loaded the truck,

    DSC02550_3d57e6f9485c13d2f76ebf2141c68c4cb58b1717.jpg
Notice above, the purple pail of soy packing peanuts from the ARB shipping carton, still haven't gotten rid of all those tings yet! They'll spill them and ask for help to clean up, I tell them to clean up their own mess! lol, and they do. :D

After pretending to drive somewhere, they even took turns driving! cool! They stopped and deployed their campsite right into my work space.:(.

    DSC02552_b5bf8ee653d794401c0dc0994f7ce1aa6928e02b.jpg

    Hilarious!

At any rate, I really like how it turned out and enjoy this kind of methodical work. Both the kids understand why were doing this, although they probably don't care, wife doesn't seem to care either, walked right by didn't even notice the door apart! wow! lol

I wanted it do it because I want to learn to weld, but I don't have a welder, and no time to learn right now so...

I'm gonna wrench the LCA's outta the way and the welder will cut the old tabs off and burn the new ones on. He's done it before. It will take about 2 hours working in tandem. Got the alignment scheduled that same day at noon. I'll spray paint the frame later that evening.

For years, I was prejudiced against the idea, had no reason to, but I was... However, it makes a lot of sense to cut road noise down if it's not that expensive to do. See the product I described below, at a minimum you could do that deadner and get an immediate result.

Similar in appearance, yes! But different, indeed.

What really changed my mind was spending time on Don's site and educating myself. I also found the right material at half the cost of the big names and I thought hell, if I am going to do all that work, why not do it so that I have a guaranteed positive result.

    Here is a useful quote:
    -Source

    Products I'm using:

$60 Noico Black 80 Mil X 36 Sq Ft Self-adhesive Foil & Butyl Sound Deadening
$119 Mass Loaded Vinyl 4' X 10' 40 Square Feet 1 Lb MLV Acoustic Barrier

Those two things above make the most difference.

I also bought some foam. The function of the foam is to isolate, separate, or "decouple" the layers in the door.

$55 Noico Liner 37.5 Sqft Heat & Cool Automotive Insulation Pad, Foam Self-adhesive.

The foam is expensive for what it is... For what it's worth, I'm going to go ahead with it and follow the path.

    Thx. Will check out!

Them sound like some nice trips! El Tovar would be a nice stay! Rim to rim would be a hoot.

I've only done the one trip in '09. Our backpacking trip had a twist when my buddy and I figured out that I had lost / misplaced my car keys. We came in on South Kaibab trail, and were going to go out on Bright Angel trail. But instead, two days later we went back up South Kaibab. No luck on finding the car keys. We checked with NPS lost and found--no dice. I called AAA who sent the NPS tow truck guy, he got me into the car where I did a comprehensive search and still, no keys could be found. I asked the tow truck guy if he could hot wire the car for me, I told him I'd pay him $100 cash. He said sure, but it would have to be after his shift ended. So two hours later he came back. He took the steering column apart and with a flat head screwdriver we started the car. Easy money! I drove my buddy and I home. He was military and deploying the next day, so no matter what we had to get back to San Diego. I got pulled over by border patrol in the mountains of East San Diego. They saw the steering column and pile of wires hanging out in my lap and we're like WTF is going on here?!? I just said look in the back seat, see those packs? We're hauling ass home from the grand canyon so he can deploy on his Navy ship tomorrow. Have a nice night he said! And we were back on our way. Got home at 2AM! My buddy deployed at 6AM lol! :D

    Good times!

Thanks for your comments Mike. I haven't been, but I have heard good things about it. It's on my list of places to visit. Thanks for the reminder! :)

I decided I'm going to use it on the roof! It's lightweight and insulates. There is a youtube video of someone who did a before and after in the rain, and it definitely helps, very noticeable in the video. If I can find it again, I'll post the link.

    Thanks Sam!

:sorry: Honest to god, wish I never saw that. To add insult to injury I was driving around today with the back speakers still out, and I couldn't even tell the rear speakers weren't there. :puke:.
