So I was having some real winter tires put on my one week old truck. The guy doing the mount broke one of the sensor valve stems. He was very sorry and obviously they are going to replace the valve stem. So now the tire warning light is on(of course). Why is when you toggle over on the dashboard display of the four tires psi, it's not showing anything. Is the whole system comprised because of the one bad valve stem? I hit the reset button and nothing changes.

Yes, you need all four sensors for the system to work!

Same happened to me when I put new BFG tires on my two week old truck (guys at discount tire broke a TPMS when doing the job and the low pressure light wouldn't go off and it also didn't show the tire pressure on the display) I spend 3hrs at the dealer and they had to dismount the tires all over again to scan the TPMS which finally made the light go off but still didn't display the tire pressure. They put the master tech on it at this point and he finally got the display working put had to plug in a laptop to do so. Tech said this the first Toyota with the tire pressure display tech and I was the first person to have this issue. Finally fixed but took forever and made me upset at the carelessness of the guys at discount tire!

Same thing happened to my 2 week old Tacoma TRD. Switched out the stock tires for Winter Ice studless tires and no TPMS. The fellows at Discount tire broke down all 4 tires and nothing found broken. Took it back to Toyota and they told me I need Toyota to reprogram the sensors for $130. No thanks I've driven for 50 Years without tire pressure sensors so I just
ignore the light. Same thing happened on my 2014 Lexus but the manager of the Discount tire found a fix and programmed the sensors. They work just fine now. Discount tire didn't have the correct program for the new truck so I'll wait until they figure out which program to use and have them fix it.

These reasons as are exactly why I never swap tires on the same rims. The other factor, tires over time coming on and off stretch and leak at the bead.

Discount Tire just did my BFG's yesterday. Swapping from the stock SR5 steel wheels. They had to swap the sensor "upside down" to get them to fit the alloy's. They were very careful and got the tires mounted. After the TPMS reset, the yellow light goes out but no pressure reading on each tire. Stopped by the dealer and he told me it was because the sensors were not lying flat on top of the rim with the swap. Don't know if it's BS, but I can live without the pressures as long as the dash light is out.

Has the fix for this been identified? I just swapped out the steelies for the TRD mags with OEM sensors and still have the light and no tire pressure. What has to be done in Techstream to get this to sync up?

I took mine to another dealer who was able to program the sensors to the truck. They told me that they would have to tear down the tires to get the number off the sensor. They did it and everything works fine. The "upside down" thing has nothing to do with the sensors. They will work, but need to be re-programmed. Still not sure why the truck doesn't pick up the new positions.

I'm trying to avoid the dealer route. I have techstream and it sees the TPMS sensors but when I use the utility I get the following:

ID Registration Failed due to a communication error with the ECU while in Initialization mode.

Terminate Initialization by connecting TC and CG of the DLC3 for 30 seconds

Then try the registration procedure again.

Try reading them as if it was a 2015 Camry. The dealer had to do the tear down, because he didn't have the sensor numbers and they are too new to Techstream. He was able to download the new software I think. The 2016 ECU is new and causing some errors.

I'm no expert Techstream guy at all, but my impression is that there needs to be a 2016 software update to talk to the new trucks. The dealer that did mine didn't have it, so downloaded it, and my Discount Tire guy's gadget only went to 2013. It didn't detect ANY sensors.

Keep me posted on what you figure out.

Do we have any resident Techstream experts with comments or suggestions?

What version Techstream are you using?

What is the FCC ID on your TPMS?

    This!

That's why the dealer guy had to tear down my new mount, to get those ID's

Did you keep the same sensors? Did they screw around with your TPMS system? If nothing was changed - there is a button under the dashboard that may help by the OBD2 connector. I found this related to a Highlander - don't have time to dig up anything for the Tacoma, but give it a whirl if they did not change the sensors and did not mess with the programming.

    • Park the vehicle on level ground. Engage the parking brake. Turn off the engine.

    • Check the pressure in all four tires to make sure they are inflated to the proper pressure. The proper tire pressure can be found in the vehicle's owner's manual and also on a sticker located on the driver's side door frame.

    • Start the vehicle.

    • Locate the TPMS reset button to the left of the steering column. The button is marked with the TPMS icon and the word "Set."

    • Press the reset button and hold it until the TPMS warning light on the instrument panel blinks three times.

    • Wait approximately five minutes after pressing the reset button. Turn off the vehicle and observe the warning light. If it comes back on and blinks when you turn off the engine, there is a problem with the system and it needs to be serviced.

Yes, same sensors. They came out of the "Styled Steel" SR5 wheels. DT had to flip them "upside down" to fit them in the new alloys.

The "Set" function extinguished the Yellow tire light, but the individual pressure read-out's were gone. I did the 10 minute+ drive and nothing worked until the dealer went in and re programmed everything. Don't know why. What happens after a tire rotation?? The system is supposed to pick up the new sensor positions, but I don't have a clue why switching wheels with the same sensors (in different corners) caused all these hassles.
