I should be picking up my DCSB Sport this week. I didn't require the factory tonneau, but the dealer gave it to me for free b/c that is what he could source.

Today I stumbled upon details of the chop job required to install the cover. Not impressed.

Questions for 2nd and 3rd Tacoma owners:

    - If 3yrs from now my cover is falling apart and I want to ditch it is replacing the rails (caps?) a big deal?
    - Are the pins already under the cap? Are they sunk into the actual bed?
    - Cost guesstimate?
    - Is the cover warrantied for the 3/36k?

    Thanks in advance!

I'd assume the OEM cover would be covered under warranty.

I've seen the OEM tonneau. It is very nice. IMO.

Looking at mine, for a total removal, take the strikers out with 2 bolts each, replace the plastic top caps and it should look back to stock.

Strikers being the pins? What do they actually bolt into?

I saw the cover in person and thought it looked pretty good, but I didn't think to open it up. Are the cuts in the rail that bad? And would there be any harm leaving the area exposed without a cover?

    Thank you for the reply.

The pins are attached (welded maybe) to a plate. The plate is roughly 1.5" high by about 3" long. There is a countersunk torx screw on each side of the pin that holds the plate to the bed. If you take those out, there is just going to be a rectangular hole in the black plastic where you see painted metal and two small screw holes. Not a big deal, but I'm sure some people wouldn't like it.

Is the tonneau surface a hard plastic? Do you have any concerns that it won't last the lifetime of the truck?

I can stomach the modifications to the bed - if I know the tonneau is going to maintain as long as the truck does.

The surface itself is hard and looks like it is more of a composite material - similar to the bed. I'd be more worried about the flex-seals at the seams than I would about the hard surface.

Anyone have a good picture of the bed with Tonneau removed? I'd like to see how much of an eyesore it really is.

    Thank you.

does it come with anything to cover those things when you don't use the tonneau? I would hate to slip and fall on those. :D

those pins/lugs from the OEM tonneau actually make nice tie down points when the cover is removed, or folded up to the cab.

Those pins make the bed look ugly with the cover. Anyone tried to remove them? Thinking of removing the cover but i also dont want those pins sticking out.

If you lift the top bed rail cover slightly, you can remove the second cover that wraps around the pin. Once you have that out, you remove two torx bolts from a plate and the pin comes out. Takes about 2 minutes each to do it. once the pins are out, you could put the stock plastic back in place and it should look the same as that pic - minus the pin.

Since my truck didn't come with those pins. I guess I can't really use the OEM cover than heh?

Nobody knows exactly what will come included in the kit if you were to purchase it separately. I would think that they would have to include the pins, hardware, and all of the plastic trim for the top of the bed.
