Besides Toyota, what other car companies can produce a pick up truck as good, if not better than the Tacoma? Sure Nissan produces the Frontier but its just not as popular. Mazda still sells a successor of its B-series pickup in foreign markets. Mitsubishi still makes a pickup for foreign markets. Ford still makes a foreign version of the Ranger. Honda makes the Ridgeline, although you can argue its closer to a SUV/Crossover than a truck. SsangYong makes a pickup for foreign markets. Suzuki used to make a pickup for foreign markets. China and India seem to be producing pickup trucks that should be able to rival the Tacoma, at least in price.
Fiat has introduced a pickup similar to the Frontier/Navarra recently for foreign markets and since it owns Chrysler it has also introduced a Wrangler based pickup, although a Wrangler pickup conversion kit has been available since 2011. Besides the Toyota, Land Rover and Mercedes there is probably no better company than Jeep to release an off road worthy pickup truck that can compare to the Tacoma. It would be nice to see Land Rover or Mercedes make a pickup but they don't market to the masses but imagine if they did produce a pickup... A Jeep truck has lineage. The first one was a Willy's back in the 40's with 4 wheel drive with the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon the evolution of American 4x4 tech, so it would only be fitting that Fiat-Chrysler revived the legacy and produced a truly off road capable "American" pickup truck. The new Colorado looks good, but it seems to be focusing on looks than on off road capability. The Rangera and Dakota are gone. A Fiat-Chrysler new Jeep Gladiator/Commando/Scraembler/Commanche pickup would be awesome. Do you think they should carry on an old name or adopt a Wrangler moniker? I think they should go back to Scrambler, but the other names are cool too. It would revive some of its lineage and I think should distance itself from the Wrangler.

With the new Ridgeline on the way, and most likely a new Ranger in the next few years, others might jump in if the sales numbers are good. Right now there is almost no incentive for Toyota to up it's game and give people more choices- they sell every Tacoma they make and do so quickly. I'm not sure the Wrangler pick up concept is any competition for the Tacoma- from what I have seen it looks like a two-person vehicle, and Jeep sales are so strong because the JKU holds four. Even an AC Tacoma can hold four people, even if the dungeon that is the back seat is of limited use. More competition will be good for us as buyers. Just look at the full-size market, where you can buy anything from mid-$20K work trucks to $60K+ luxury trucks from 5 manufacturers.
