ABS light on, Locker wont activate

    Ive got a 2004 tacoma dbl cab 4x4, rear locker, ABS light is on and the locker will not activate. Any suggestions on a diagnosis?

    fuse maybe?

    I know ABS is disabled when the locker is engaged (at least in 4-low)

    You can't just clear the code by disconnecting the battery. There is a procedure, I'll get to that in a minute.

    Generally if the ABS light is on, your ECU is trying to tell you it thinks you have a problem. You should check it out. Otherwise, it will just come on again. The good news is, you can start the process the same way you'll eventually clear the code.

    First, connect terminal 4 and 13 of the OBD-II socket (under the dash in front of your left knee) with a jumper wire. (Those are the 4th from the left on the top and the fifth from the left on the bottom.)

    Turn the ignition to on. You'll notice lots of flashing lights, but just pay attention to the ABS light. Normally, it should be rapidly and steadily flashing, twice per second. If it has stored a trouble code, it will instead be flashing a pattern that will coding a two-digit number. There may be more than one code being flashed out. It will just repeat the code over and over, so you have plenty of time to figure it out and write it (them) down.

    NOW you can clear the codes. Just tap the brakes rapidly 8 or more times, about two taps per second. You don't have to jam on the brakes, just tap them enough to blink the brake lights. If you're successful, the ABS light should return to its normal fast blinking. Now remove the jumper wire, and finally turn off the key.

    Now when you turn on the key, the ABS light should just do its normal light for three seconds and go off. If it comes back on, you still have a problem

    You can look up the trouble code in the online tacoma FSM that you can find by googling, or you can post the code here and ask. Have fun!

    Wow thats incredible! i should add that the locker will flash but not ever engage the locker itself. Thanks for the help!

    It's crazy this happened to me this weekend after a hard run the traction light came on and it was deactivated and pushing the button for traction just wasn't doing anything. So I took it to my dealer and they told me the sensor must have been ticked off so they had to recalibrate the sensors for $108 after my friends discount.
    I'm a 2nd gen so not sure in their similarities in regards to sensors.

    Is the ABS light on all the time? Or just when your have the diff lock button engaged?

    My only ABS issue has been with my mustang, every now and then the abs light would be on (which disables traction control) and over time it was on more often until it finally was just on. After many moons of it being on I got tired of it and took the car to the brake shop. They charged about $90 to tell me they couldn't get the abs module to communicate at all, $1600 fix to replace it. Online found that cold solder joints failing is pretty common with the bosche module, easy enough to pull it. I found a company that repairs them, $65 and 2 weeks later the module was back in the car and working correctly. The mustang ABS doesn't communicate through OBD like the rest of the car does, no codes to pull with my scanner. So there was no way for me to find out what the actual issue was without going through the brake people. After that it was an easy fix.
