Bought my truck used a few months ago. It's got this/c and the trd exhaust. If I roll my windows down, the exhaust doesn't seem that loud, but with the windows up I get a significant amount of drone. It's not bad, it just seems that it would sound better on the outside than the inside, but that's not really the case. Does anyone else get the sense that the exhaust is louder in than out? Does it have anything to do with cats or resonators?

Drone is a well known issue with the TRD exhaust. Many people install it and then later remove it for that reason. Nearly every automotive review of the TRD Pro (which has the TRD exhaust as stock) complains about the drone. The system is a cat back, so the cats are the same.

Yeah, I peaked under it today and noticed that it was pretty straight forward. Will a different muffler help? Like a flowmaster or magnaflow, etc?

I know nothing of the trd cat back. I have the banks monster cat back the drone is minimal. But I feel almost all cat backs have sum type of drone. This is the first Toyota I've ever owned but have all types of cars and trucks and most cat back have droned

I've had the TRD cat back for about 10k and like it. It does seem louder inside than out but doesn't drone at all now, not that resonating, make your head hurt type of drone. When I first installed the TRD cat back it did drone a bit at low rpm when you would put some load on the truck like pulling a small hill. This has completely stopped after some miles. I think a lot of times that people don't give an exhaust time to break in.

I've got a 2007 2500 Ram with a 5.9 Cummins and it would drone! On that truck a Corsa cat back totally eliminated the drone and sounds great.

Problem is....things like this are subjective. I think my TuRD exhaust is louder and drones more with the windows down. Either way....it is on the louder side. Honestly though....I've not only gotten used to it's sound but have grown to like it. Yeah, it can sometimes be loud, but it's got a throaty tone a lower rpms and sings pretty good at higher rpms. My wife drives it from time to time and told me once not long after I installed the exhaust that it "sounds like a truck now". o_O

OP....I'm sure you could find a TW member in your area that would swap your TRD for their OEM. But remember your TRD exhaust will only fit '13-'15 DCLB models (your sig looks like a long bed).

    nothing cool
My has some serious drone when driving in town with stop and go traffic. Hardly any noise on the highway. Honestly I really just wanted the welded on TRD exhaust tip but got a good deal on the entire exhaust.

I think it is worse on the double cab short beds because the muffler is right under the floor of the backseat. the cats having nothing to do with making it quieter. that's why the regular muffler is so huge and heavy

My Tacoma has the TRD Cat Back and I do not even notice it. The truck has had the exhaust since new, so maybe I am used to it.

The only time I even notice it is when I floor it merging on the freeway etc... Noise is such a perspective issue. I am pretty tolerant. I have a buddy that is driven crazy by the slightest noise, squeak etc... on his truck.

I think I should have added that I know there's some drone with an aftermarket exhaust. It just seems like the exhaust is as loud inside as it is outside. Also seems that if that's the case, it's not flowing as good as it could be.

I think it is. The OEM muffler is clearly designed to be as quiet as possible....as it's large and full of baffles and what-not. The muffler on the TRD is smaller because there's a lot less horseshit in it, so it can flow better.....hence the "noise".

Please don't quote me on this...but I think TRD claimed 5+ hp.

I believe Toyota claims a gain of 8-10.

I have been around hot rods etc... for a long time. Getting a cat back system for sound or look is ok, but I haved never seen one give you a noticeable feel in the go pedal.

Even if it does give as much as 5 hp...that would be hard to feel. No ones butt-dyno is that sensitive.

I have a 2014 TRD Sport and got the TRD cat back exhaust cause I got a good deal on it when I purchased it new from the dealer. Not to beat a dead horse, but it is subjective like many have said already.

It does have some drone, but you get used to it over time. Definitely not regretting getting it put in. But that's just my opinion.

There's always people on here looking for them, so if you're interested in getting rid of it, I'm sure someone would buy it.

Best Bang for the buck in my experience has been gears. This has held true for Hot Rods, 4WDs etc... Every set I have done has had a noticeable seat of the pants effect.
