this is my first Tacoma 2011 wondering in the winter can you leave 4H on and drive slower stop and go traffic? Is there certain speed ranges for both 4H and 4L I shouldn't exceed or go lower than

    First, welcome to T.World!
Then, what kind of road conditions are you driving on? Wet, dirt, snow, ice, etc.
If dry pavment then why the 4x4 unless just tring to cycle it and use it.
We like to say "use it or lose it".
We need a little more info to help Jeff.

    Graf,

    1. Did your truck come with an owners manual? Your owners manual is a great resource for when and where and how to use all the functionality of your truck.
    2. 4wd trucks usually have 4wd use and recommendations listed on the drivers side visor.

No owners manual, conditions would be snowy, city and x-way driving basically Michigan winters

    1. Welcome. Awesome site here.
    2. If you have a 2011 Tacoma, you should be posting in the 2nd Gen forum (05-15 model years) and not this one for 1st Gens (95.5-04). Although your question sounds like it's independent of what year truck you have.

    3. To answer that question, always use 2hi on dry pavement and in most conditions. Using 4hi while driving around normally can wear out your drivetrain. In other conditions it's really up to you, but remember that 4wd does not make you and your truck invincible. It's not a license to drive like an idiot on dirt roads or in snow. 4hi will work at the same speeds as 2hi, but consumes slightly more fuel.
4lo changes the gear ratio of the drivetrain such that the engine and transmission turn more for each revolution ofn the wheels. This is useful for wheeling, crawling up/down hills, and general low speed applications.
