    Get a ball peen hammer and go around banging on the frame. Hammer goes through......walk away. The frames rust from the inside out.
    Get the VIN number and take to the nearest Toyota dealership and check the records. Eligible for a new frame..... Your call.

    Is that coil spring a helper for the rear leafs? Is it just wedged in there? I don't see any sort of actual mount for it which seems quite sketchy and would not bode well for other care this truck has received. Its hard to tell though. If it hasn't gotten a replacement frame and is eligible, the clock is really close to up for that coverage.Aa 2001 truck could easily have been first registered in late 2000, so definitely check with Toyota for eligibility.

    The frame doesn't look terrible but I would definitely crawl under there and try to punch holes in the frame with a screwdriver. I believe that the rear coil spring is a modification referred to as the "Zook Mod".

    Good luck with your purchase,
    Charlie

    that's serious rust, I would walk away, even if its not rusted through "yet" I may last just long enough to go past the warranty that expires in 2016 then your going to be screwed because I cant see that frame lasting another 5 years.

    I think those "helper" coil springs added to the back are there because the rear leafs are shot and need replacing.

    its going to be a money pit for you and they is no assurance it even qualifies for the extended frame warranty or if you can expect to have it rust through before the deadline to get a new frame before the frame warranty runs out

    Thanks for the input. I am taking a 1999 into the shop tomorrow to have it looked over. Its a 3.4, but the frame looks the best of all I have seen. If you have seen my other posts, this is the one with a newer engine put in. I have driven it and it feels really solid and had a tacoma guy look at it. It does have a few things but the price is decent. Hopefully it checks out with the compression test tomorrow, and I can finally pick something up. I was hoping for a 4 cylinder, but it sounds like I wont save too much more on gas, especially on the mountain roads here.

    If it works out first thing I will be doing is getting the 60/40 seats back in, and some normal sized winter tires.

    As for the frame pics above for the 2001 4cyl, toyota inspected it and said no recall but cleaned and undercoated it in 2009. If I can, I would still like to check the above frame out whens its not caked in mud. The guy with the 99 that was supposed to go in the shop today cancelled on me and cant do it until friday now. So fun to be in the market with a budget (;

    I keep looking at the rust free 1997 but I just cant get myself to spend 9700 cdn on 1997 vehicle with 213 000 miles..
