Stalling from 2 RPM to 3 RPM Diagnosis

    Hello there,

    I have a '96 Toyota Tacoma 3.4L that has about 239,000 miles on it. Here recently as I'm getting on the freeway or just accelerating in general, my truck has a rough time trying to go from 2 RPM to 3RPM. It seems as if it gets kind of stuck. Does anyone know what might be causing this? I'm trying to get some ideas as to how much it will be to fix this. Thank you.

    When's the last time you changed the fuel filter?

    Or cleaned the intake (MAF sensor, throttle body, etc)?

    The fuel filter was changed about 3,000 miles ago (and is about to be changed again) As for the plugs and wires, I believe that they were changed about 10,000 - 20,000 miles ago.

    What kind of plugs did they put in?
    Double ground plugs are what you engine needs.

    I'm pretty sure these are what we put in my truck. I'll double check here in a minute to be sure.

    I talked to someone who has worked on cars all his life and he said to check the transmission oil and see if it's low or if it smells burnt.

    Do you have a scan gauge or any type of obdII reader? See what your ignition timing advance reads in this area.

    That's a good idea, but usually the RPM's will go up when the transmission is slipping.
    In neutral, does the RPM's still get stuck while reving the engine or only while the engine is under a load like driving?

    In my '01, I didn't have too many stalls while accelerating, but would get them when just starting. checklist things to go through which have already been stated:

    Plugs and wires
    air filter
    Clean MAF sensor
    Clean throttle body and IAC (idle air control) valve (this ones a bitch to get to, but worth it)
    Fuel filter

    Also, after cleaning the MAD and IAC, be sure to pull neg. battery terminal

    A few OE parts from fancy trucks
    Once above 3k will the truck pull hard to redline with smooth firm shifts?

    If yes, it's not fuel filter or a clogged cat. Things that restrict fuel or exhaust worsen the effect with speed or load.

    While checking trans fluids should be routine, you must have described something different to your friend than you did to us for him to jump to that suggestion. Like there was a shifting issue as opposed to an actual engine performance issue.

    Does the engine rev smoothly /freely with no load (neutral)?

    Does your engine have trouble revving up in neutral/park?
