Hey everyone. First post. Looking at a 2001 double cab SR5 PreRunner for my son today. Have always loved the look of the first gen tacomas and feel it will be a killer first truck for him. The truck is listed in South Florida Craigslist for sale in Plantation, FL for $7,000. She has 227K miles, one owner, his brother works for a local toyota dealership as a mechanic and it seems to have all major work up to date. What should I be looking for when I inspect this truck?? What seems to be the biggest issues in a late model Tacoma with high miles?? What would you pay for this Tacoma?? Any input would be greatly appreciated!!!
    Thank you!!

price sounds fair, mileage sounds high but not terrible. if its the only one you have found its not a bad deal but to be honest, I would keep looking to find one with 100k-125k miles on it. it will likely be priced from $8k-$9k and maybe as high as $10k-$11k depending on condition but its a much better long term option if the idea is to keep the truck for another 10-15 years.

anything over 150k miles you have to think of possible engine wear issues and even though these engines can go 400k miles, that is only if well maintained with regular timely oil changes and driven "respectively" as in not dogging it.

as for what to look for, RUST frame rust is the #1 killer for these truck and they rust from the inside out so by the time you see serious rust the frame has been compromised. most northern trucks have rust issues from road salts but since its in florida, the salt there can be a concern especially if they used the truck to back boat trailers into the water.

Keakar--thank you for the reply. Just found this site and could have searched a little more before posting first question. I want to this truck to last my son about 4-5 years. Plan on modding it out a little bit. Taking a look at 4pm today. We will see how it goes. This site is fantastic!!! Ton of information and the search function works really well. Thanks again, any addl. comments please send em.

if its a v6 3.4 engine check on the last time and mileage of the timing belt replacement. there should be a sticker right on the timing belt cover.

it should have it done at least every 100k miles and the kits costs around $250 and should be bought here http://www.ebay.com/itm/190521450224?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT its all 100% oem totyota parts used and it takes some time to do but it isn't hard job. if you have to pay someone to do it expect it to cost about $500.

if its a 4 cylinder, they have timing chains that virtually never go bad or need adjustment but they all have unsolvable rough idle in gear issues that is not because it needs a tune up but because its just the nature of the 4 cylinder engines.

that's about all I can think of other then the obvious things you check

Decided to pull the trigger at 7k. The previous/original owner took incredible care of her. Seems to be having a hard time selling her. Extremely clean inside and out. Real solid little truck. Do you suggest putting a cold air intake in her??

no, they are a waste of money.

if its a 4 cylinder then I would do the fender mod where you remove the air fitting that goes into the fender and cut the 90 off of the back side of it so it gets more air and doesn't have to suck from the restricted ductwork inside the fender.

if its a 6 cylinder, I would leave it stock since any intake mod will just increase noise it makes but wont give you any benefit from doing it.

in either case I would put in a permanent air filter so it breathes better and clean the MAF sensor and throttle body and replace the plugs and pull the wheels to check the condition of the brakes as your maint items to do with any used vehicle,

Thank you for the welcome. How do you post pics?? Picking up on Monday. It has the 3.4 6. The guy I am buying her from is meticulous. All oem parts. All receipts. Almost didn't want to sell her to me because he thought my son may be to rough on her. Replaced AC 6 months ago. Did a bunch of other stuff. When I pick her up I will post what he has done, you guys will understand it a lot more then I do. What is the MAF sensor and throttle body?? Thank you so much for the cold air intake advice keakar!!! I am looking for a lockable bed cover due to my son being a hockey player and fisherman. Did him to be able to securely leave that crap in the bed. Seems like there aren't a lot of covers available first first gen Tacoma's. Bakflip seems to be the only one I can find. Any suggestions???

If you have a smart phone you can take a picture of the truck and just push upload a file and choose from your library. But I like how the owner took care of the truck. And your throttle body is where your air intake leads into and goes towards your intake. I will post pictures give me a min to find or upload the files.

Your son's truck won't have what's on top of my engine. But your throttle body is located left where the 2 cable wires lead to. It's not that hard to remove.

Your MAF sensor is right in your intake tube. As shown in this picture above the flash light.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Good choice, it will last him beyond 4-5 years if he takes care of it! Get him through high school and college easy.

Get MAF cleaner and get throttle body cleaner. You will see them at O'Reilly's and such.

Take it off and then spray it. You don't want to spray it while the throttle body and MAF is still on the truck.
