Toyota isn't gong to come up with new shift programming - as they would have to completely re-certify the truck's fuel economy and emissions with the government (maybe multiple governments). That costs a lot. Besides that, the short shifting is intentional on their part - it isn't a service issue.

I would be interested to know if people just aren't using the shifter the way it was intended. When we want quicker acceleration in our Venza six speed with this shifter, we just shift it over to S mode which put's it in 4 th highest and press the peddle. When we want to then cruise, shift over to D. Then, all we control freaks can just pretend we are driving a manual.

I certainly feels like ECT also changes the throttle response. If all it changed were the shift points then pulling away from a stop would feel the same. Pulling away from a stop with ECT on is different then pulling away from a stop with ECT off. I had a car in the past that started in second gear when the econo button was pushed and started in first when econo was off. Maybe ECT is doing the same, starting off in first when ECT is enabled, starting in second when ECT is not enabled.

I'm sure the throttle response is changed too.
