Oh how I hate the idea of doing anything "trendy" just for the hell of it..... But I just HAD to try it.... Did the platidip thingy yesterday. First time. So far, so good!

I received an OEM Toyota front skid plate. It had a heavy coat of dark gray paint that was scratched up and not sticking any too well. So I bead blasted it back to almost bare aluminum. Then I put a coat of aluminum finish epoxy paint that I happened to have on hand. It looked pretty good, just VERY shiny. I wanted to kill the shine and end up with a natural aluminum "mill finish". So my new paint needed to be dulled down. This is when I found Duplicolor brand paints has a plastidip type "clear matte finish" in spray bombs. I laid on a heavy coat (6 light coats actually) and let 'er dry overnight. As I was rolling out this morning to head to work, I stuck my head in the garage to take a look. EXACTLY what I was hoping for!

Pictures will follow at some point once I get the skid plate mounted on the truck.

I hope this doesn't start something....I swore up and down I'd never partake in the derp revolution....o_O:facepalm:

Nothing wrong with Plasti-dipping a skid plate, though I'd go for spray-on bedliner instead. I laugh every time I see some paying good money to have a skid plate powder-coated.

My #1 goal was getting the color I wanted.....Trying to make it look "OEM". The epoxy paint I had was a perfect match, but was shiny as a new penny. But....Since I already had it, FREE! The matte finish derp was an experiment....It brought the shine down to that nice matte finish. Not a flat, but no shine! I sort of expect it to get scratched off in short order, but at least it looks good now. Not 100% sure I'm gonna like the looks of the OEM skid plate....It may stay on, maybe not.
