Hood Vibrating

Hello,

I've had my 2016 4x4 Limited for about a week now. While driving I've noticed in the center area of my trucks hood it would vibrate while doing about 35mph or faster; or when driving over rough surfaces.

I went to my dealer today and looked at one of theirs on the lot and we discovered the ribs under the hood metal surface theres some kind of glue that supposed to stick the ribs to the metal top part. On mine and the other vehicle the glue is separating. The glue feels like a slightly dried marshmallow type texture. Not hard or soft and sticky but more of a medium texture.

Have any of you noticed this issue?

 

It was harder to actually see the glue stuff on mine but the one at the dealier the glue could be seen really well. It had a bit of overflow squeezing out but it still wasn't sticking very well. I'm gonna get it looked at at my 5K service. If they don't have a fox I'll probably get some foam or something to put between it and it should stop the vibrating.

 

I too noticed my hood vibrating a lot at highway speeds. Looked under the hood and it's just like OP here stated. The adhesive that is suppose to hold the bracing to the underside of the hood is not adhering the two surfaces together at all. To me it looks like it was either a bad batch of adhesive or the wrong adhesive was used. The adhesive is dried out looking and is separated in the middle, leaving the residue on the hood and some on the bracing. Here's a picture of mine. Sorry the picture is not the greatest but it should give an idea.

 

I noticed the same thing today and thought to myself......this is going to make the paint crack quickly and it's extremely distracting at highway speeds

 

I made a video the center brace driver's side glue is separated whereas the most driver's side brace is still holding on

Will have dealer fix when I take it in for tint / whatnot

 

Good post, I will look at mine as well. I don't recall seeing mine move but I am want to check it out just in case.

 

Br careful putting any expanding foam under there. It's common on alot of vehicles. Even adding the proper adhesive can cause low spots on you hood aka dents. A body shop would have a better chance than most dealer ships will.

 

As much as we paid for these trucks I'd thought they would have had a better solution than the stuff they used. My 2012 was rock solid, I wonder where else they may have cut corners.

 

You 2012 was built the same way as far as how they adhere the hood to the braces. Now the adhesive may be a different brand.

 

Man What Next !! I think by the time I get mind the list of things to check will be two pages long
Having 2nd thoughts. Might just keep my 2011, 70000 mile and not one issue ever !!!

I've noticed the same thing on mine at highway speeds, will look under the hood tomorrow in daylight.

 

I just got off the phone with Toyota cust. service. They opened a ticket for the complaint (along with a few other small issues I'm having). Going to go in and have them send photos to corporate. I'm sure this will get taken care of. I used to be in the aerospace industry and we used alot of these types of bonding agents. In my semi-experienced opinion, the bond split because it never cured completely/properly and this was typically caused by poor mixing of the agents (bond agent/catalyst) or expired/out of date materials. We used to have to dispose of any glues/bonding agents that were past their expiration due to safety reasons when building UAV airframes. Perhaps this is the root cause of this issue.

Something to note: At the end of my discussion with the cust service rep at Toyota offered me a $500 customer appreciation "retroactive reimbursement" of parts, accessories, or servicing at a franchised Toyota dealership for my trouble. Now I am not sure if this is std procedure with them or if it was due to the fact that I was truly trying to improve their product and others experience by relaying information helpful to a known issue, or because I was simply tactful and kind during the conversation. But nonetheless I am extremely impressed the way they are handling issues customers are having with the teething problems of the Gen 3 Tacoma.

 

Should be an easy dealer fix but maybe....

What plant are these trucks coming out of, Mexico or Texas.

 

Mine has the same hood bouncing at speed or on rough roads. IIRC it's from the Texas plant.

 

Looked under the hood this morning and saw the same issue as shown in the above photos, the adhesive has failed. Have set up an appointment with my dealer to look at it and fix it.

 

Maybe glue that holds costs extra.

 

Gorilla Glue would work. Just sucks a lot of your time to get the dealer to do it. I would make a big fuss about it if my brand new truck did this..

 

Sounds like they are pushing the trucks out as fast as they can. Oh well mine will be here in 10 days. I am going to take a look at it before I take delivery. Ah well the truck is exactly what I want for a vehicle for the next 10 years or so and it probably won't be built any worse than a Ford which was my 2nd pick for a vehicle. One can only hope.

 

For the money they want for these trucks, your hood coming unglued is a bit unacceptable.
