    I started the truck with smart key in pocket, went inside purposely left smart key on table and drove away. As I drove away the truck beeped at me and instrument panel told me that key was not detected in truck. It looks like I could drive as far or fast as I wanted without smart key. I would expect to be SOL if I was to shut it off.

    I am sure it is plausible to jump into running, warming truck without key, impossible to drive away not knowing you did not have key with you. This was something I needed to know.

    Yup if you would have turned it off sol would have been about right.

    One would think they would've at least had enough sense to make the truck shut off if you pushed the brake without the smart key present similar to a lot of remote starts. Not really sure there's a scenario where you would want to drive without the smart key.

    When I test drove my lexus the salesman held the key. Other then that I have no clue either.

    When we go on road trips it has been a practice to use a hide a key. It was easy fix to family getting separated and still have access to stuff in truck (don't like to travel without my own security system). This procedure will have to change with the smart key.

    So if I separate the key from the FOB, can the truck be started with key only?

    I read that we can shut down the proximity side of the FOB, maybe that is best for traveling.

    Of course your car was going to drive away even without the key in the car. It's to keep your car from turning off if the battery dies in the fob or its stops communicating for some reason. Wouldn't want it to turn off while your car is moving.

    Wouldn't be any reason for it to cut off while in gear or moving. Just seems logical for security reasons to not allow the brake to be pressed while in park without the smart key present. You can still start the truck if there's an issue with the fob by touching the toyota emblem to the start button though.

    Key will only open the door. Holding down the lock button and pressing the unlock twice will put fob into a sleep mode indicated by 4 short red led flashes. Hitting any button will wake it up.
