Drive shaft "u joints" ?

U-Joints went in without problems. You would not believe how much parasitic drag one bad U-Joint can generate. Fuel mileage went up 4mpg with this one repair.

 

i have had my u joint go 2 times and the steady bearing go 3. i have all stock suspension. i think there is definitely something wrong with the system.

 

How many u joints for front and rear drive shaft? R they all the same ones

 

3 for 2WD, 2 for 4WD. And they all use the same ones. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

 

My A/C has 2 in the front shaft, 3 in the rear shaft. 4x4 auto.

They are different, 2wd u-joints are sealed while 4wd u-joints have zerks.

 

In case anyone reading this has trouble greasing the front zerks - I always did - the solution is to use a small one hand grease gun. You can easily push coupling on to the zerks. I always had a hard time getting coupling to lock on with the larger two handed gun - the grease always shot out around the zerk instead of going in it.

 

Sorry, to go thread-digging, but I just ran into this same issue.

My '08 Tacoma (2wd, with 136,000 miles) needs a new u-joint, but they say that they must replace the entire drive shaft along with the u-joints.
Ouch...$$$

 

That is what Toyota says and that is their normal procedure. You do not need to have the entire drive shaft replaced.

Do it yourself or take it to an independent repair shop and just get the U-Joints replaced. I would advise you to replace all of the u-joints at the same time.
