All original, except for 16" Ford Mustang allow wheels, fit an look great. I have replaced the exhaust manifold, radiator and the AC compressor since I bought the truck with 185K miles. Overall it has been very reliable.
Hi, This is my first posting. I have a 96 2WD Extended cab Tacoma PU, Its a 2.4 with 5 speed. I an the second owner, I purchased it with 185K miles on it, it now has 262K. This is the base model with only a speedometer. I have an instrument cluster out of a 97 Tacoma that has the electric speedometer and tach. I was wondering what it would take to install this 97 cluster in my 96. My 96 has the cable speedometer drive. The new cluster does not have a cable connection as it is electric. Can I replace the cable at the transmission with the correct electrical speedometer sending unit? Are the wires in the 96 Tacoma harness? Has anyone done this before? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The title should say can a 97 cluster be make to work in a 96 Tacoma.

well the cluster will fit but you don't have the plug or the wiring for it to work so you would need to replace the cluster, dash wiring harness, under truck wiring harness to the tranny, and im not sure if the tranny can just be fitted with the electronic stuff or not to be honest but I doubt it would have the proper mounting system on the tranny housing.

why not just get the cluster with the mechanical speedo cable and mileage gauge, and the tach? that's the best option and it would be a simple plug in and your done

one thing I have learned about these trucks is there are no universal wiring harness so if yours doesn't have something then there are no wires for adding it, with the exception of the speedo only gauge cluster can be swapped out for the combo one with the tach and it plugs in and works.

Hi, thanks for the response. I don't think there is instrument cluster with a mechanical speedo and a tach for 96 tacoma. I was hoping the wiring in my 96 would plug into the 97 cluster. I have not taken the 96 cluster out yet to see what it looks like yet. I like the looks of the 97 cluster with the tach and was hoping I could make it work. I was hoping someone had done this mod before.

the clusters on the 95.5-96 are all the same so you just need to find one of those with the tach, only the base models didn't have tachs so it shouldn't be hard to find one
the trick is finding a manual tranny one which aren't as common

    here is one here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1995-Toyota...ash=item2105e3b944:g:jWcAAOSweuxWTlrN&vxp=mtr

I am pretty sure the mileage meters can be swapped out so you can keep your correct odometer reading

Manual tranny tach clusters are more common than auto. In my 96 is the super rare mechanical speedo cluster with tach for a 4cyl auto. Make sure when you buy a cluster that you get one that came out of a truck with the same setup as yours. A V6 cluster will read differently if put on a 4cyl truckc18b8a82dc42ee17751bb9d72c2da82f_bad182723b7d6c77ddc73ba21304cc3122bde5fd.jpg
