The biggest thing that too many people seem to overlook is the *transmission*...not the engine size.

Get the 2.7 with a 5 speed and it's peppy as hell, will accelerate to highway speeds on any on-ramp, pull frame-locked Tahoes out of sugar sand, pull it's own weight in traffic, etc. And when you aren't working hard, it'll pull 23MPG even while city driving. I've got 120,000ish miles in 2.7 5 speeds, and the performance + torque + mileage is consistent.

Now, you start bringing the automatic into the equation and that all goes to hell in a hurry. I love my 2.7 5-speed, but I wouldn't buy a 2.7 auto if you held a gun to my head. I test drove a couple and I couldn't believe they were even the same engine.

The 6 is the opposite. I test drove some of them, and the gearing on the manual is...well, to put it nicely...:crapstorm:. IF I had to take a 6, I'd go auto all day long.

I agree, my 2.7 with 5 speed has plenty of power. The transmission's gear ratios are well chosen. I've never felt a lack of power.

the 2.4, then the 2.7, pulled the truck fine back in the day before it got fat. 16mpg with my 11' 2.7 was ridiculous. the v6 is returning better mpg given the same driving characteristics. sad, but true.

hey, i still have a taco!

The only regret is that I love the sound of a toyota 6cyl - although I wouldnt really call that a regret. As far as performance, other than highway speed, I really don't missing having a V6.

My truck is super fat but still moves everything around fine but for sure 5spd or death with the 2.7 I'd have bought a V6 6spd had they not had this 2.7 5spd on the lot

Nope. I love my '15 4cyl. Fits me perfectly. I wish I could have found a manual, but there just wasn't any in the configuration that I wanted at the time.

I had a 5 lug '07 AC 4 cyl automatic and liked it, then got a '14 DC PreRunner 4 cyl automatic and liked it too but was wishing for more power. I now have a '16 DC 6 cyl and love it! I get the same mileage of my '14 (21-22 mpg) but got lots of passing power! Sad to see the new 6 cyl got better mpg than the 4 cyl even with a 6 speed transmission! I would had gotten a 4 cyl if the mpg was better than the 4 cyl with 4 speed auto (would like a 5 speed manual but my '88 Celica Alltrac with racing clutch messed up my knees).

No regrets, just make sure to get the 5spd. Makes the world of difference.

Also the money saved from going to the v6 and trd. You can make the 4cyl way better and still get great mileage :)

I have no regrets with the 2.7 even though I wish for more power all the time. However, this truck wasn't made for that. It's made for crawling around on dirt roads and driving short distances with 1000lbs of crap in the back once in a while. It does get down the road at a fairly good pace if it get's revved to 4000rpm which is where it makes it's real power at. I'm very happy with mine because I use it for it's intended purposes. It'll cruise at 80mph all day and get 20+ mpg then climb a mountain at the end of the day. So what if I have to drop into 4th on steep grades to maintain 55 with nothing in the bed. It doesn't happen very often and the 2.7's with manuals need almost no maintenance except for oil changes.

Grass is greener. I drive a lot up mountains and wish I had V6. Sometimes I feel like I need to put on my warning blinkers, I'm just crawling while other drivers speed up into Mammoth. Automatic btw. And I'd like the ability to tow more than 3,500 lb (smallest Airstream is right on the limit). However, I get to where I'm going and I have no specific, immediate plans to tow anything larger than a small cargo trailer. So the I4 forces me to be a bit zen about what I have and how long it takes me to get places. :p

We should start are thread, do u think the v6 is worth the extra money. I couldn't justify spending that much more.

No regrets for me. I live on an island where our top speed limit is 55. My 4banger is more than enough for my needs.

    No regrets at all.
I gave up V engines in 1973 and never looked back.
Not interested in racing or any kind of that high performance stuff.
Just give me an inline engine any day.

Nope. I would get a v6 before I got one in automatic though. As far as is the v6 worth the extra money? Not in my opinion, I only wish I had the power when I am on steep windy 2 lane roads for passing. If I towed long distances regularly it would probably be worth it. For my driving though, I'll save the 3k up front, get a much more reliable drive train, and sacrifice the horses that I rarely wish I had.

Installed Cooper At/3's (265/70R16) and ProComp 7089 Rims. Tinted front windows. Did the Fog Light Anytime mod. Did the tailgate mod. Added running boards. Adding sound Deadening from RAAMaudio. Replacing stock speakers with Polk Audio DB6501's.
I bought a 2013 4cyl 4x4 automatic and it was "OK" for around here. Downshifted a lot on the interstate hills. Last December I traded it for a 2015 6cyl 4x4 automatic. Much better choice for me.
