All the stars were aligned, everything was thumbs up and then I got the text - SORRY!

Well I've been working with a dealer for the past four days on getting myself a Tacoma. Looking for an Inferno 4x4 Off Road with JBL. My dealer found one in the region, it's flagged as tradable but they won't trade. The truck they want to trade is the same truck in silver without a couple of accessories (side steps, D-rings and mud flaps). The dealer that has the truck still has it and they want MSRP. The dealer I'm working with will sell to me under MSRP. So I emailed the dealer who has it and said, look - I'm a business guy. I'll give you guys $500 to trade the truck out of my pocket and now I'm waiting for a reply. This seems pretty stupid and silly, but I just want the damn thing. Winter is starting and I'd like to enjoy it. My Christmas present!

The dealer that I'm working with has two other units available. The Silver Off Road DCSB with JBL, Tow and the floor/doorsill package. They also have a Inferno Sport 4x4 DCSB with JBL, Tow, exterior package (tube steps, tonneau cover, exhaust tip, bed extender), hood graphic and the floor mats/doorsill protectors.

I have a Silver 2002 DoubleCab 4x4 TRD 3.4L Limited right now and thought I'd change it up with some color. My other cars are all white or silver, so it's a little bit boring. However they'll give me $2k off MSRP on the Silver Off Road and almost $2,600 off MSRP for the Sport. These were revised prices after the trade fell through. Before, the prices were about $300 more respectively

Leaning towards the silver Off Road. I don't like the Sport wheels and the lack of the locker. However it's the color I want. I don't wheel much, but the locker has came in handy a few times in my 2002 and with the mod it's a lot of fun in 2WD. To me it just seems like the Off Road has more content for the price. I know it's been debated and the dead horse has been beat. The tonneau and side steps on the Sport they have are not my style, however the price difference is +$1,100 between the two with the Sport being more expensive. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Inferno color though! :)

So I just need to keep working it, compromise a bit or wait. I only found a couple of dealers in the area who will even deal on these. Most are MSRP, one offered me $200 off MSRP (I replied, am I really that special?), so from a price perspective they are doing well for this region in my opinion. I'm also trading a 2014 Durango R/T AWD that's fully loaded. They have an offer of $35k on that which was right around what I was hoping to get. So other than them not getting the Inferno Off Road, everything else is lined up.

Maybe you'll see "Here are the pics of my new Taco" this week, maybe not. I can always order, but I would love to play around a bit this winter. That's worth a small bribe to the dealer who has it, since I'd still be getting the truck for almost $2k under MSRP after it's traded. Fingers crossed, but my hopes are not up. lol.

Sorry for the rambling and waste time. Maybe I just needed to vent a little.

Nice post. I would go for the silver and add some inferno seat covers:) You've had all those silver and white vehicles for a reason. I always ask myself, what am I going to be happy with 5-10 years from now, silver or inferno? You can be boring and happy at the same time. FWIW, good luck!

The issue is it's out of state and I have a trade. I already did the negotiating at this dealer so I'd prefer to salvage that if I can. Not sure I want to give up $1500 to have it. $500 yes. We'll see.

Good point. I normally keep vehicles around 2-4 years, just depends. I didn't want Inferno until I saw it in person and now it's like all I want. haha.

Inferno is such an awesome color. I managed to find one and a dealer who would actually deal on it. I didn't want the JBL though, I have a ton of stuff stored behind the rear seats. I think the OR package is a much better value than the sport

Most people on here are Off Roaders, to say, but a lot of common folk like painted pieces that match the truck. waste of money, if anyone ever asked me to comment on it

I'd go for the Sport personally. Inferno isn't complete without the hoid skewp.

How much is having it NOW to you? Do you really want to pay two grand more?

I know it's hard but just wait. The novelty will wear off, the extra $2k will not. You'll be just as excited to have it after Christmas.

Well, I think I have some good news. I've been playing the dealer shuffle and living in a world of misinformation. I decided to pass on both trucks at the dealer I was working with and contacted the dealer who had the truck. They came back at MSRP but I worked with them today and ended up here:

    Tacoma: $39,368 MSRP / Discount $2,000 / Net Price $37,368 + Tax/Doc Fees
    Durango: $34,500 Trade Value

So in the end, they actually only missed my original dealer by $200. I asked for a set of All Weather Liners - waiting to see if they can do that. If so, it's a near wash. The only hassle here is I'll have to SMOG the truck once I get it here and go to DMV myself. I am paying the tax at the time of purchase, so I won't have to pay it again here in CA. It will be transferred or at least recorded as being paid.

Here are a few dealer pics of what I'm getting:

The only thing I thought I might want were the Orange interior accents which this one does not have, however I'll probably prefer the more sedate look over time anyhow. Otherwise, it's just about the way I would have ordered it. If all goes well, I will go pick it up on Friday morning.

If you want something, you gotta fight for it!

Well they ended up throwing in new All Weather Liners (the newer style) and touchup paint, so the net difference is around $60. So I'd say I did pretty good! :)

That's about 2000 less than our 7568 with tow, mats, and exhaust tip. Not a be deal. What area was that in? You were very lucky to find one in Stock. That's a rare build, and even more rare in that color!

Awesome! Good luck and smooth sailing bringing it into the state. Ca has always been asshats if you try to buy out of state.

California is a pain if you buy a vehicle and try to register it elsewhere to avoid the tax all together or you buy a vehicle out of state that does not have CA emissions. The truck has CA emissions and as long as I have proof of paying tax, I'm good to go. Just gotta pay registration and title fees after smog. I didn't buy it out of state for any reason other than getting the vehicle I wanted.

The price was exactly $2,000 under MSRP but that does not include the free liners or paint, which is about $175 in value. So all told, I'm paying about $2,175 under MSRP. It is a rare build and is the only one to be found in my region. I checked with my friend who's in SoCal and they could not find one either. I actually thought I was pretty lucky to find a 4x4 Sport in Inferno with JBL and a 4x4 Off Road in Inferno with JBL. In a few months this will probably be moot with plenty of stock to go around.

The truck now has a SOLD sign on it, so it's all mine. :)

I'm getting the truck from Doland Toyota in Reno, NV. My initial dealer was Thompson's Toyota of Placerville, CA. Thompson's has the best price in the area and actually had decent stock of Tacoma's.

So far, Doland has been great to work with even tho their reviews online were mixed. The two guys I've talked to on the phone were nice, informative and clear with their communication. Thompson's wasn't quite as good in this regard.

Well the difference really comes down to what you want out of the truck. The Sport is geared more towards on road and the Off Road is geared more towards off road capability. The sport has the scoop, painted flares and 17" wheels. The Off Road has 16" wheels (better looking IMO of the two), black flares (some love, some hate), locking rear differential with a larger carrier assembly, Bilstein shocks, Multi-Terrain Select, A-Trac, Crawl Control and no front air dam. For me, I feel the Off Road is a better value since you get more content for your money. The only thing I'd rather have is painted flares - the scoop makes the hood a bit busy to me from the drivers seat, though it does look pretty good.

Trust me, I was almost going to go with the Sport 4x4 but I'm glad my persistence paid off. I think the Off Road if not beat to shit will have a bit better resale value down the road as well.

Hey congratulations! Persistence paid off. I am wondering how CA state tax works; do you pay only on net value after subtracting your trade? Also, don't know if you've seen the orange stitching in person; it come on the black interior only, includes the orange dash ring, and is quite a bit darker than your graphite.

No, you pay on the full vehicle value then you subtract trade.

Thank you. It was a roller coaster of a day to try and get a Taco! I believe I pay tax on the $37,368 - the trade equity is only seen as down payment money.

As for the seats, I have seen the orange stitching. The Sport 4x4 had the orange ring and orange stitching on the seats. I don't think the seats were black though, so maybe that's a difference between the Sport and the Off Road. It looked pretty nice though - just a little accent within the interior. However, my 2015 Charger SRT 392 has bright red seats, so if I need accent, I'll just go sit in that for five minutes. LOL.
