    Ladies / Gentlemen,

I am currently in the purgatory that is the decision between a soft tonneau, hard tri-fold, and full soft-topper. A proper hardshell is out of the question, as I just don't want something that big on there all the time.

My question for you ladies / gentlemen is if there is a soft tonneau that is generally waterproof, or can be made waterproof with some extra weather stripping? I see this as a cheap way to 'try out' one of the bedcover options before REALLY deciding on something.

Also, I'd love your opinions on what you have and if you recommend it - whether it be a hardshell, soft tonneau, soft top, whatever. I have read through this forum for hours on the subject, and every time I think I find a suitable solution, I find another thread bashing that solution as crap that pours water into the bed. MAKE UP YOUR MIND FORUM.

Any input / opinions are appreciated!

Based on what I hear from here and there, Access Lorado and TonnoPro soft roll up are waterproof. For a folding soft tonneau, Extang Trifecta is a good choice. Try to visit-- http://4wheelonline.com/tonneau-covers.222468 to know more about these covers and other options. I still recommend a hard tonneau for security reasons and they are more durable.

I'm running the TruXport from Truxedo. It is their basic roll up tonneau, and so far it had been very good at keeping out rain water. I have even had it through the car wash once (usually hand wash). The cover has gone through some very heavy rains, and only a couple times has there been a small amount of water that got in. I have had it about 3 months, and I'm very impressed so far. The cover runs about $300 so it is reasonably priced.

Thanks for the reference - I will check out the Trifecta.

My purpose for the cover is purely to rainproof my bed to carry kiddos' cargo back and forth between their mom's and my own house, which is about a 12-hour drive. That's likely the only time that I'll use it, so I don't need security and really can't justify to myself the close to $1k price of hard covers that, from reviews, let in just as much water as the soft ones.

    Thanks for the suggestion!

I have looked at Truxedo quite a few times, and I may try one of theirs out! There's that and then the Access Limited, which I have also heard very good things about. I'm going to buy within the next month or so, so it's likely to come down to one of these. I guess the deciding factor will just be reviews.

    Thanks guys!

Hey tacoTaco..we've talked before about the Truxport on a different thread (I'm the guy with the back surgery) and I second this. So far, the base truxport has kept the rain out - not even a drop yet and we got crushed yesterday with rain in north carolina. SO I am very satisfied but as I've mentioned to you before I have only had it for just over a month. It's very simple to put in (I only had one hiccup during the process).

Mine waspriced $289 on Amazon. Most of the time you can return this stuff but with a bed cover it will be difficult if something goes wrong 2-3 months later. That being said, IIRC there is a warranty I'm sure on this.

Hey thanks for the reply! Yeah I'm still sub'd to your thread and am paying attention to how it's doing, for sure! The Truxport is absolutely on my list of considerations. I'm deployed and don't get home for a few months, so I'm going to keep researching for a bit and then order closer to when I will be getting home. Thanks a lot man!

    Other opinions welcome!

I've have an extang for 5 years, I haven't made and changes to it and it keeps the bed dry even going through a car wash. If you don't need security, it rolls up easy to carry tall items in the bed.

I just nabbed a TonnoPro trifold soft tonneau on eBay. Used 6 months, looks great with all mounting hardware. I'm hoping it seals well.

I have one as well 90% water proof. Driving in hard rain all day, you'll see a little water between then grooves on the bed (less than a cup of coffee) cad wash the same thing. But I have had no issues with tools rusting or bags getting wet on trips.

A few OE parts from fancy trucks
Extang Tri fold here. Biggest leaks are occasional drizzles down a little of the side of the bed, maybe a couple tablespoons full in a good rain.

I don't care, because I'm not trying to weatherproof anything. But I'd not expect any softcover, unless it laps over the body at least 1/2" or so, to make the bed perfectly dry.

All - I ended up going with a BakFlip G2. There was a group buy going on, and I just couldn't turn down the price of it.

I'm going to experiment with some pretty extensive water-proofing techniques. I will start a thread about it - I'll put a link to it in here once I start it.

I'm traveling for work until January or so, so I won't get to enjoy it for a while, but I wanted to thank all you guys for your input!

I'll also post a review of the G2 in the Product Reviews section, for any of you who are interested.

    Thanks!

Bought it for $127.50 with all hardware and everything- picking it up today. The one thing I've really missed from my old Tacoma was a tonneau- it was a roll-up style that was a pain when it was super cold. I'm hoping this will be easier to deal with.

I just took a Truxedo Soft Tonneau off my 2013 DCLB and had it for the past 2 years. I never had an issue with water getting in the bed of my truck. It was very good quality and sealed well.

I just installed the TonnoPro trip food I bought. At the front of the bed there is space from the bed top to the tonneau, about 1/4-1/2 an inch. Light comes in all the way across. Also looks like it may not rest on the top of the tailgate as well... Any suggestions? All factory installed rubber seals are attached to the tonneau.

I've also never owned one of these... Do you crank all of the knobs down as tight as you can by hand? I don't want to ruin anything. The instructions are very vague.

There should be some weatherstripping for the front of the bed. You may need it for the tailgate too.

Tighten the clamos oy enough to hold it on. You can bend the plastic rubs in the cover if you crank too hard.

I bought it used so if there was any extra weatherstripping it didn't come with it so I'll hit Home Depot tomorrow. There is a strip of weatherstripping attached to the Tonneau cover already but again there is a gap

Yeah, you need a price to attach to the truck.

It's pretty routine to get some weatherstripping of your own to 'fill in' some of the gaps that some soft and hard tonneaus may leave. Even on the nice hard tri-fold Extangs / Bakflips, I regularly hear of guys trying their own methods to fill some of those in. No worries - it's normal!
