I've noticed for a while now when rolling along at 10 mph or so just as I stop I hear one single click from the front as I apply the brake. No other noise. Is this normal ? I have 31k on the truck. Could the pads be worn is that click the brake engaging and just let it go ?

    I have a 2014 sport

    Thanks.

If it's a single click, it's the pad shifting in the caliper. Normal, especially as they wear. Putting a line of caliper grease on the edges of the pads will fix it for a while.

If it's a more pronounced clunk, it could be the lower control arm bolts are not torqued enough. Mine were about a half turn off being correct and it made an awful noise every time I slowed down or stopped since the whole arm could move very slightly and knock.

Check your LCA cam bolts, mine were hand tight one time. I have to go check them every few months or so and at least 1 is always under torqued. 100 ft lbs.

Glad mine isn't the only one that seems to do that.

Hey, at least we know they're not going to seize from rust since we're tightening them periodically!

I have heard the brake "click" or "clunk" for a while now, always first brake press after acceleration. It is maddening and makes it hard to sneak up on people in parking lots...

While replacing my wheel bearings, I think I found at least one cause of the noise and two potential fixes are relatively cheap and quick (<$15). the noise I hear seems to be coming from the brake caliper pins which get gunked up and rusty with time and that causes resistance, which causes the click or clunk when brakes first pressed. I can make the sound by slapping the pins with my hands, you can try it and see.

It is called Pad Slap, but seems more like "pin" slap to me. here is an example of a pin. there are two on each caliper and they can be removed and reinserted without anything other than removing a cotter pin with needlenose pliers. Of course, you have to take off the tire first.

    1) Pull the pins and sand or wire brush off the gunk and rust, you can see how mine were rusty and nasty. Then, lube them with silicone or other brake grease, and reinstall. I used Sil-Glyde from Napa (Part # 765-1351 $6.49 for a tube)

    2) Buy new pins from NAPA, lube up with silicone brake grease or other brake grease and replace them ( part # 82682W $3.29 for two, you need four pins so $6.58 + tax. here is a picture of the part box on the right, the other box is for the front brake cotter pins and pad retainer thingys .

Hope that helps and I do not work for nor am I affiliated with NAPA in any way, I just got my stuff there so I had the part #s.

I have a '08 TRD 4x4 that does the same thing. I only hear it when my windows are down, though.

100% agree. Here's my pins after pounding them out. After new pins, no more noise.
