    I picked up a project truck and it needs some repair. It's a 03 4x4 v6 manual.

First problem is there's zero clutch pressure. The p/o told me has had the slave replaced 60-80k ago but he believes that is the culprit again.

Upon visual inspection there is a greasy area beneath the slave but the master is filled with some dirty looking fluid leading me to believe the slave may not be leaking and the grease may be from last failure. Are the slave and master the only possible culprits?

Also the rubber boot on the arm the slave pushes on is not seated and I can see in the hole. Is this a concern?

Can you have someone press the clutch while you observe the slave? You should see some movement, if not check for fluid pressure at the bleeder. That is a pretty good leak there.

I will have to set up a camera tonight to see if the slave moves in response to the clutch.

I'm picking up a new slave tonight and will likely slap it on. Is there any concern bleeding the dirty fluid through my new slave? Should I use a turkey bastor to get most of the dirty fluid out of the master before bleeding?

    Thanks in advance.

It is a good idea to replace both the master and slave together .

I would flush out the system before installing the new parts

Let it drain out till your getting fresh fluid.

with that little mileage since it was changed the fluid should be clean yet.

Okay I will get the master as well.

The p/o is not mechanically savvy but it appears the slave is quite rusty suggesting maybe he was confused and had replaced the master and not the slave.

How much fluid does it take to flush/bleed the system? Going to pick some up tonight.

I took the slave off and no fluid came out..

There's still fluid in the master so I'm assuming it's pooched. Going to pick up a new one, fingers crossed.

You should look real careful at the whole line from the master down to the slave.

looking for it being crushed or kinked

Because the fluid in the master reservoir should drain out once the line is removed from the slave cylinder

    I agree ^^^^^^

While you are there , have a peek at the floor boards where the pushrod comes through the firewall . Thats another place well known for leaking .

Thanks. That's a good link. Wish I would have found that prior.

Seems the master is likely the issue. Will update after replacing.

Replaced master and slave cylinders this morning and clutch is working well. Matching up threads from old push rod was key.

Congrats, I had that same issue with no clutch so end up replacing the master and slave and that fixed the problem.
5 step to fix this problem, 1. Check the guide rod for any leakages, 2. Check the clutch line, 3. Check the slave for leakages, 4. Replace both master and slave and breed air out, 5. Start driving.

So what’s the chances of changing your fluids (just in the reservoirs for brakes and clutch) and the next day the slave cylinder goes out? Apparently pretty good for me.

Had to get a tow home, used clutch override to back into the garage, and I’m winning as the two bolts and brake line nut broke loose easily.

Set up phone and recorded video while pushing on the clutch pedal… and out comes the nasty fluid. Guess I’ll be doing full fluid system replacement.
