Here is a picture of the one that crapped out. I assume 17" is the compressed length and 28 pounds is the force I need.

That said, how do I know ensure the ends are what I need if I buy them off Amazon or something?

Put the part number into a search engine and you'll get a match on your topper. I replaced mine a few years back, it was super easy.

I just called my local dealer. They had them in stock. I got them that day and I know they aren't low grade, questionable internet junk.

^^^ This. Shop around the local camper shell dealers. Over the 20 years I've had my shell I've replaced them 2 or 3 times. The last set I bought were cheaper from a different place than I'd bought the first sets and have lasted several years.

This one is from my local dealer. Lasted about two years before blowing its guts all over my bed.

    improved toyota goodness.
i got mine at auto zone...
i just gave the guy at the counter the old one and he went back and found ones with the same ends and lengths.
the new ones work very well and since the only ones they had in that size are for hood props they pull it shut at the bottom of the stroke as well as push it open and hold it open. no idea on pounds factory but by feel its the right strength.
