RTT mounting options and questions

So I've been exploring RTT mounting options. I like the idea of a Yakima rack for my cab because I don't want the RTT up there except for the trips I choose to use it. Easy on off with these type of racks.

Issue I've seen with these is for instance the Yakima rack claims max load is 96lbs. The tents average 100-110lbs for the one I'm looking at. Then add the occupants at about 300lbs total. I am assuming the 96lbs means rolling weight and it would be different when sitting still but no idea. Anyone with actual info and experience on this would be appreciated.

The other option obviously is like a frontrunner roof rack or even one of their load bar set ups. My issue with this is a I don't really want a roof rack on my truck at all times. Plus if the RTT is on the rack you can't putting anything else on it so what's the point of such an expensive and nice rack if it's complete consumed by the RTT.

I'd really like to hear ideas and input on the Yakima or Thule type racks please. This is for a Gen 2 double can Tacoma btw.

 

you need a full blown roof rack to set your RTT.

those thule racks arent going to cut it

 

I wouldn't mount a RTT to those Yakima racks. Get a real roof rack like a Frontrunner, Prinsu, or Bajarack.

What do you have on the box of your truck? If you don't like the cab idea you could get a bed rack or some bed bars to mount it over the bed instead.

 

@Greddy mounts his on yakima cross bars above his cab and I have mine on Thule bars on my canopy with no problems. Plenty of people do it so you shouldn't have a problem.

That max load rating is for underway bouncing down the road, when your at camp its much higher, also half the RTT weight is on the ladder when open. You shouldn't have a problem at all

 

Mine's on a Thule roof rack. happy happy happy.

 

Both CVT and Tepui tents suggest the Yakima or Thule racks.

No issues at all. With a stock height truck, the Thule bars hold it at the perfect height for the annex. I may get a fairing to try to reduce wind noise, but that's it.

 

Those adjustable height silver Thule racks can support a Rtt?

If so that's best of both worlds - support tent lower than cab height for wind resistance, then support lumber weight over cab when needed.... Then removed for dirt bikes.

 

I've only seen 1 person use that with an RTT but it seemed to work just fine
