Is this a dangerous amount of rust or will this be alright after removing and applying a protectant?

Here is the rust, I took two pictures from underneath at the rear section of the vehicle.
Also, does anyone have recommendations for products to treat this rust and prevent it from continuing to build up?IMG_20151107_122926.jpg IMG_20151107_122934.jpg

    Where do you live??

Remember these frames rust from the inside out

Time for the hammer test .Do this before adding more paint.

Now it just looks like the paint peeling

I'm no expert, but after looking at them again. Seems to be rotting from the inside out....

beat the hell out of it with a hammer so all the loose stuff falls off, then you can see whats left and see if its pitted badly.

I agree with having dealer inspect it but I think your just out of warranty so it may be too late for that, a 2000 truck frame warranty will run out in 2015 so if its still in warranty you literally only have 4 weeks to get it registered for frame replacement

The worst part of the frame is what is pictured above. The rest of the frame looks fine from the exterior and from what I remember the frame has already been replaced or treated by Toyota while still in the previous owner's possession. (I've only owned the truck since late May this year) I'm gonna go take a real good look at it tomorrow and see if I can get a view of the inside of the frame.

You need one of these. Once you get all the rust scale off, hit is with some rust inhibitor and rust resistant paint.

you wont be able to see inside the frame, its enclosed so best you'll get is looking inside a hole here or there which wont tell you anything

your truck has 4 weeks left on the warranty and you need to have the dealer inspect it unless you don't care if you lose the truck when the frame breaks after warranty is over.

if you don't bring it to the dealer you risk being stuck selling parts off of it by next year when its unfixable and unsafe to drive.

Your first photo shows a definite crack two inches above your shackle bolt. this is where all of these frames fail. You need to bring it in and have it inspected. Previous owner probably had it sprayed for warranty and you will most likely be getting a new frame. Don't screw around just bring it in. Just looking at your year of truck you might be out of the time window for a new frame. Get to a dealership as soon as you can. preferably the one who sprayed the frame.

Having lived all over that area i am allowed to say: it is the worst!!!!
North WI they give up on the salt and people assume they will be driving on ice for 6 months of the year. But south of Stevens Point they fight mother nature hard. And it isn't like you can wash it off because all the car washes are closed until May.
In july I looked at about 20 tacos for sale in Wi and Il. All were rust buckets unless new or almost new. Every car i owned from MN and WI rusted out quickly. Grrrrr.
Colorado does a surprisingly good job on the highways and i really feel our rust is negligible relative to WI. We use MgCl solution here with a proprietary corrosion preventer (I have analyzed it with an ICP and HPLCMS and can not figure out what it is). That might explain some of it, but i think it is more the duration and extent to when and where it is used. Sorry, off topic.

Looks dangerous to me, OP. Agree with others' assessment that this cancer grows from the inside-out. Can't hurt to check with a couple of dealers, but...

Assuming those are photos of the "2000 Tacoma 4x4 TRD Offroad SR5" listed in your profile, I don't think they'll be of any help. (I don't recall whether they were covered by a warranty extension program similar to the attached.) IF they were, I'm sure warranties wouldn't have been extended past 15yrs from the vehicle's original in-service date. Regardless of whether your frame was treated/replaced previously, your warranty expired this year.

There is nothing that can not be fixed !!!

The question is weather it is cost effective to you.

Needle scaler and Permatex Rust treatment. Have used it on a boat repair and it is still holding strong after being constantly wet for years.

You'll have to chase rust down the frame and the tight corners until you see no more in the area you are working,,then bonk it a few times with a ball peen to make sure you have good material still. Then prep and paint.

I don't know if I would trust that spare tire carrier,,that looks really bad in that area. It might look worse than it is.

Try the dealer option BEFORE you pick at the rust. If it was treated,,you need to find that specific dealer and go back because the prep work failed. If it was replaced, the vin should be somewhere in the system,,,hopefully.

I thought the 2000's didnt fall under the frame replacement but the buy back instead? Any 2000 should be outta any coverage reguardless id imagine.

Alright, I beat the shackle with a hammer then did some light scraping to chip off some of the little stuff. Not much actually came off, and I tried to take a picture of what it looks like now, but I couldn't get a picture of the shackle without the sun in the background.1.jpg 2.jpg

I would agree most likely, if it goes by the mfr date, but if it goes by just the year, then it might have 4 weeks left on it, still worth having it checked to find out for sure

from the looks of that you have serious issues with that frame, possibly time to start looking for another truck serious unless you know someone who can rebuild the frame for you with about 30 pieces of scrap metal welded everywhere
