So I decided to pull the trigger on the Tundra brake upgrade for my '98 Tacoma. I've noticed a bit of a decrease in braking performance with the 33's on. Got all the parts, new slotted/drilled rotors, Performace Friction pads, Wheelers lines.

Got the brake lines unhooked, not too difficult.

Drivers side off, test fitted new rotor, calipers, all looks good, put it all on (didn't connect lines yet). Beautiful!

Go to do the passenger side, and would MY luck let me keep a simple job simple? NooOOOooo. Forgot to check the socket wrench, and using a breaker bar (the tech at the dealer who did the last brake work on my truck must have had his impact wrench set on 'attitude') managed to shear off BOTH mounting bolts. Bcz it was set to tighten 'em, not loosen 'em. And I didn't double check. And I'm usually pretty anally retentive about these kind of things. But I let the excitement of the moment get to me.

    *&%$#@.

So we managed to mostly drill out the bolt bottoms and have mostly clean holes to work with, so trying to decide what our next step should be before we get too much further.

I'm thinking Helicoil to fit the M-12 x 1.25 original bolts. If we go this route, by the time we enlarge the hole enough to take the helicoil insert, is there still enough material on the knuckle to support the stress from the larger brakes?

My buddy is suggesting drill out to the next larger size and re-tap the holes. The only (?) downside to that would be we may also have to drill out the holes on the new calipers, which I'm really really REALLY not interested in doing.

So I'm looking for other advice/suggestions from here. Is the helicoil option the better way? Any other suggestions? If worst came to worst, I could always finish up the drivers side, mount the new (or old) rotor on the passenger side, and take 'er down to the dealer for a new knuckle...that's a job I wouldn't even want to tackle. The dealer is only a few miles away, over relatively flat surface roads, and I'd drive super careful knowing my braking is gonna be wayyy off and pull to the drivers side. The cost of having them do the R/R on the knuckle is secondary to me at this point. I want a safe, reliable braking system at the end of the day.

    Thanks everyone.

I'm assuming you sheared bolt in the spindle? Honestly I'd check www.car-part.com and find a used spindle and just swap it on..

I have some spare spindles and hubs that you can have for free. I live in Enumclaw, WA. PM me if you want them.
I think you'll need some press work to get them installed, and maybe a new wheel bearing.
