Toyota Remote Start/Mud Flaps available from Toyota

I am patiently waiting for remote start and mud flaps to become available from Toyota and my salesman is to call me when they are available. I know Best Buy, etc.. has remote starts but had a bad experience with remote start install at Best Buy on my FJ Cruiser so will stick with a Toyota installed remote start.

Got some snow here recently that is melting now so roads are a mess and really want the mud flaps to hurry up because the TRD wheels I added have more + offset than stockers and really covering the sides

 

My dealer said they could install a Toyota OEM in my Tacoma but would not recommend it. He said the range was only about 80 feet and that it was expensive-$800.

I was considering getting a remote start from Best Buy. What was your bad experience?

 

their 'tech installers' aren't that and are idiotic and cause more problems.

I haven't personally had experience with them (for this reason and that I usually do stuff myself) but its very well known with all the car clubs and car meets in toronto that most bestbuy jobs are absolutely fucking terrible. They cause problems down the line. Just do shitty joints, sloppy wiring etc. If you go with aftermarket I'd say go to an independent shop where the guys that work their actually know what the fuck they are doing. My sister had a stereo system installed by them once it was terrible. sloppy wiring. When I took it apart because she was having problems all joints were just twisted together and wrapped in tape.

Its no different than the repair techs for laptops at bestbuy. My friend used to work for HP in their repair section and he saw a lot of laptops come in that were serviced by bestbuy first. They put the wrong screws in different spots. pinch wires while closing it back up. Just do overall sloppy work. And a lot of them aren't even actual techs just guys that had a resume saying they took a highschool tech class and know how to assemble a laptop because they did it on their own at one point and it worked ok.

 

My toyota aftermarket salesperson told me they don't recommend remote starts. Due to the reasons already stated. Also they said they were unreliable

 

Yup, same thing from my dealer...said don't do it...to many problems.

 

I have never heard anyone at the dealership say not to do it. They just don't have it currently to sell. Oem systems are very reliable and also covered under warranty.

If you go aftermarket make sure you go to someone who is reputable.

I have one that was installed before I bought the truck. It is definitely finicky. It works 75% of the time and the giant keyfob is a pain.

For example, I travel a lot, so the truck will sit for a week or two. If it is winter time, the battery will lose a few cranking amps after sitting idle for two weeks. The remote start won't work. I have to physically start the truck myself and drive it for 10 mins or so to recharge the battery, then the remote start will work.

Another pain is the keyfob. It runs thru batteries quicker than normal. I am replacing a battery every month on the keyfob and the buttons are touchy. I am waiting for the day to walk out of the grocery store and the truck is running and I didn't know my pocket keyfob has inadvertently turned it on.

 

We bought a 2015 Highlander in September for the wife and had Toyota install a remote start. Not sure if it was Toyota brand or something else but they used the existing key fob to start the vehicle. It's pushing the lock button twice rapidly and then holding the lock putt on until the blinkers flash rapidly, then it starts. Works great and no extra fob to carry around.

I didn't get one for my new Tacoma based on previously stated response by them.
